'94 F-250 Ext Cab, Long Bed:Rack for RTT Suggestions

I've got a '94 F-250 that I'm considering doing a RTT on, but don't know where to start when looking for a rack to support it. I would like to have the RTT over the bed and have it almost as high as a ladder rack to carry gear below.

Where do I start? Besides fabbing something does Thule or Yakima or anyone else make something for my needs?

Thanks!

IMO, your best bet would be to construst something yourself so you are getting EXACTLY what you want, and usually at a fraction of the cost.

Find a local fab shop to build you something. It will be cheaper then you think. If not maybe a local high school with a welding shop. you might get away with Material only.

Personally I do not like the RTT kits. What I did was take a KargoMaster pro II construction rack and weld a platform on top that I can set my tent on. I have enough room for two north faces tents up there if they are the same size. Plus I have this big rack that I can strap a bunch of stuff to. Its pretty sweet. Here are some pics of it when I was down in Mexico last month.

I may be getting rid of my fj cruiser and getting a fullsize truck again and turning it into my expo vehicle and that is exactly what I was planning to do. You can pick up a used lumber rack dirt cheap an mod it yourself or leave it as is.

That is what I would do. Check out craiglist for cheap racks. With construction in the crapper, now could be a great time to get a rack for cheap.

Regular Tent on Lumber Rack?

Um, Darwin, and others I guess, why put a regular tent on a lumber rack? I struggle even with the necessity of a RTT here in the states but okay, if that's your thing and you want the look ... but why a regular tent on a lumber rack? I'm completely dumbfounded.

Thanks,
Carl

I don't know about you, but I can definetly see the point. I just spent all day cleaning out my tent, sleeping bag, and bike. It was filled with sand, salt and all sorts of other crap. Granted I have used it alot and was doing a bunch of partying the last time it was out but still it seems to me that having a tent up on the roof of the truck would minimise the dirt, sand, mud that got in it. Also it would also be a clean flat area to set it up and then you would just need to try and get the truck in a semi-flat area.

I think the ones that fold out as one piece make more sense but even a normal tent up top would be nice. It would be more modular to not have a solid mounted tent. I can see that going either way.

The more I think about it, the more this is the direction I think I am going with my truck. Its simple, wouldn't stand out, and still be easily used to haul crap when not camping. The catch for me is if I put a lumber rack up there, it would make it even more difficult to remove the cap to load quads/dirtbikes.
