I have one of these. It needs a few tweaks but for $50 it gives you everything you need instead of building an iron pipe contraption that would cost you $40 in iron anyways.

I had it mounted in my 95 Disco, screwed into the passenger side of the trans tunnel with some big *** self drilling screws. It was solid.

I've been running a RAM mount in my truck going on 4 years with no probems. I'm using a tablet pc so the weight is a bit less than a laptop so I'm sure that helps.
I don't have an actual picture of the mount unfortunately.
This look neat, what software are you running on the tablet - looks like something i would prefer, not a fan of the small screens on normal car-GPS. I´m looking at a GARMIN 720, but it´s for Marine use, not sure it will work with road and topo maps?
