I want to put a 9" in the back of my YJ.

What would you say is the price premium to run a HP 9" diff versus a LP diff?

Honestly I don't know. I got my HP9 from a TJ I bought. The PO had spent a lot of time and money getting the TJ "just right" then sold it way too cheap to move on to other things. I bought it, kept the parts I wanted, parted out others, re-installed a bunch of stock parts and then sold what was left over for my original purchase price.

Worked out well for me.

rear tire carrier

the rear tire carrier shown in your first set of pics.. I've seen the style before, mostly on TJs.. but never see them advertised.. wondering if you made it, bought it.. or any details either way on it.. interested in a similar one for my CJ7 and just haven't had luck finding any...

I built it. I made new hinges for the tailgate and used the heavy steel corner guards to reinforce the mount. The other side bolts directly to the tailgate and has a mount welded to the factory tailgate latch. It also has a pin to hold the bottom tight. The whole thing swings with the tailgate. It is plenty strong and holds a 37" Krawler with no problem.


To be honest, I am changing the tire carrier. I want the tailgate and the tire carrier to swing independently (and from opposite sides) as part of the rear chuck box I have planned. I'll cut this one up to build the new one.

What was the idea behind having the tire carrier stand off from the tube that far? Storage of jerry cans or other stuff?

Storage is exactly the reason. The spacing will fit Fuel/Water cans. Also, as you can see in the first second pic in this thread, my upper doors are stored there. I have two small children (1 & 5) and need as much storage as possible inside the Jeep and those upper windows take up a lot of space. It's nice having them outside.

Also notice the receiver tube through tire, that is for even more additional storage. I can put a cooler rack there easily. I can also mount racks through the back for storage between the tire and body or a bike rack.

The idea was to make a versatile, modular storage/spare tire carrier. But, as we are often prone to do when customizing our vehicles for personal use, I changed my mind!:arabia:

JeepN.. thanks for the response.. looks like a cool setup.. I've been debating about shelling out the cash for one of the rockcrawler bumper/swing out tire carrier and hi-lift/jerry can holders.. alot of the commercial ones (and many of the eBay ones) are not cheap.. your setup looks sufficient, not to mention simpler..

Great YJ. I loved the old photos and the progression the Jeep went through. Nowadays, everyone has a digital camera, but those must be film, and for some reason, they just look more nostalgic. Very cool. Ive had a couple YJs so Im definitely partial to them.

Thanks, I had a very nice shakedown run this past weekend with the Trail Keepers (www.trailkeepers.org) in TN. It was the first HARD trail ride I had been on since the major mods. Jeep performed great except for a few minor problems. Should have those bugs worked out shortly and have it ready for my Memorial Day camping trip.

LOL...Yep, film. I used the lazy man's way of scanning them for computer use. I layed them flat on the kitchen counter, and used my digital to take a picture. Not perfect, but quick. :chef:

ha ha...whatever works. It seems you do a lot of stuff in TN...what part? Im in middle TN, and would love to take a trip sometime...although your rig will be able to handle a whole lot more than mine. But we have a trip on March 7th to Woolys Off Road park if you are interested.

What engine harness (Painless etc...) did you use or did you splice a factory5.0L harness in and what tranny C6 or C4?
