My Montero will not stay in 2wd, it pops out. My 4x4 shifter is loose and seems to have alot of play.
Took it in to two shops and they know nothing..... Both said i have to stop to shift it into 2wd and then it should stay. I KNOW THAT IS NOT TRUE. MONTEROS ARE SHIFT ON THE FLY...
Any ideas or help would be great..
thanks,

Have you changed the fluid in your diff?

It can be a few things. The solenoid is going out or clogged. (vacuum switch /actuator in the engine bay that controls awd).

You have debris or gunk in the shifter gear /lever by the boot.

Or the lever is worn out/needs adjusting. Possibly a dirty sensor.

Looking for that thing i just had in my hand...
99 fullsize? Probably needs a fulcrum ball in the shifter assembly. Common issue but also popping out of gear isn't usually a symptom of that, typically they get stuck in gear. Make sure it has oil in it AND do you have a body lift?

I don't have a replacement lever on hand at the moment but will let you know when I do, this is the problem about 80% of the time.
