This was going to be our original stop before we had our wreck. 5 years ago we drove half way down Baja and this was were we spent our first night. Its an awesome little hotel and restaurant that has the best cracked crab we've ever eaten and probably the strongest margaritas we've ever tried. We only spent one night because we are in search of warmer weather. Mexico's got that right? We're not so sure anymore

Camper Repairs

After the wreck we were fortunate enough to have a Canadian family who lives here stop to help us. They work for a humanitarian relief organization and have some houses they rent for the volunteer groups that come down. They offered us one for as long as we needed. The next day we helped them out a little bit with the school they were building and that's where we met Carlos. He's one of the local contractors they hire to make sure the volunteers put all the pieces in the right places.

Our truck was pretty banged up in the back but still drivable, and our insurance adjustor said we could get it fixed in La Paz. The camper we were a little more worried about. One of the jacks was bent all to hell and that needed to get fixed before we could even lift it off the truck to get the body work done. The door was pretty messed up too and we weren't all that comfortable with how secure it was. So, Carlos came over on his day off from work and helped us get everything banged back into shape. We had to do some hammering, clamping, twisting, and welding (the welding was all Carlos), and in the end the door still looks like it was in an accident but it closes and locks better than before. And the jack will hold the weight of the camper while the truck is getting worked on.

Bahia De Los Angeles, Baja, Mexico

Bahia de Los Angeles (Bay of Angels) seemed like a likely spot to find some sunshine and warm water. While it was warmer than it had been farther north, it was still a bit cool and windy. However, it was such beautiful, seemingly endless empty beach we couldn't help but stay for a couple of nights. We stayed at Campo Archelon, which is run by a very friendly couple and has wonderful stone-walled palapas right on the water and has been the first place we've seen that recycles.

Awesome! I anxiously await more. It's obvious that whoever was driving that van didn't bother to use a seatbelt either. Know how I know? Anytime the windshield is spidered high and to the right of the driver it's a tell-tale of a high speed head butt. It's a miracle they weren't seriously injured.

Playa Escondida, Bahia Concepcion. Baja, Mexico

We are a ¼ mile down a dirt road, parked feet from the turquoise water of Playa Escondida on Bahia Concepcion. There are no alarm clocks, no name badges or uniforms, no one calling my name to tell me someone needs me or that I have a phone call. It's been three days, and besides Pete I've only spoken to a few people. Mostly just to say “No, Gracias” to the folks who venture down to our more secluded end of the beach to sell hammocks, rugs or other souvenirs. Occasionally we buy some shrimp, firewood or vegetables. On one glorious day, only moments after we say we are craving it, an ice cream truck shows up, music and all.

Its Been a While. Update From Mainland Mexico

Its been way harder to update things than we thought. We're well into mainland Mexico at the moment and hopefully getting ready to do our 4th border crossing( we dipped down into Guatemala for a few days) into Belize in the next few weeks. We stayed in Baja longer than we planned because we were waiting on getting our truck repaired. Its not a bad place to be "stuck" though Heres a few of our favorite spots from the first half of Baja.

Loretta... where we spent several days meandering the manicured square, befriended our camp neighbors, a very welcoming, hilarious couple that winter there from the states and eating delicious fish tacos we still compare all fish tacos to.

After leaving Tecelote we headed down the East Cape and drove on some of the worst roads we've ever experienced which led to some of the most beautiful, remote beaches we've ever seen.

Following the East Cape road we headed south to a spot where we camped completely alone for over a week with only the occasional visit from a fisherman, herd of goats, two donkeys, and regular puppy guest that we came very close to adopting

I can't wait until we can drop out like this for a while. I have only done one extended trip in Mexico, a two week baja tour, and loved every minute of it. Traveled all over, turning back at La Paz. Did you drive back north to get to mainland Mexico or is the fairy operating again that crosses the bay? Also, curious why you created a separate thread about your gear on the trip? Is it to keep this exclusively about the trip? Seems that trials and tribulations are just part of the journey. I will keep checking in and hope you all have a great journey.
