Afghanistan would be an awesome place to visit if it was not a war zone. Wars and land mines ruin countries for many generations. Unexploded munitions make offroad travel into an exercise in Russian Roulette for many years into the future.

One of the good things about offroad travel in Arabia is that we never had to worry about land mines and unexploded ordinance. In sixteen years in Arabia, I read about only one expatriate injured by unexploded ordinance.

"When you're wounded and left on Afghanistan's plains,
And the women come out to cut up what remains,
Jest roll to your rifle and blow out your brains
An' go to your Gawd like a soldier.
Go, go, go like a soldier,
Go, go, go like a soldier,
Go, go, go like a soldier,
So-oldier of the Queen!"

Powerful stuff. Real as it gets. Folks who piss and moan that there Starbucks isn't made just right should be forced to look at all of them.

Here is my Afghanistan contribution. I took this image last summer in the Wakhan Corridor. It was mellow at the time, although bandits had raided the area just the week before - ignorance was bliss.

Great snapshots. Basetrack is a photojournalist collective, not a single Marine.

Here are a few of mine when I was over there last year, also taken with a crappy little camera.

Air assault in Logar Province:

Recon mission in near Pul-e-Alam, Logar:

Foot patrol with Czechs through an extremely sketchy village in Azra, Logar (16,000ft). We caught a guy videotaping us. They ambushed a later patrol, killing a Czech and an Afghan policeman:

Our "base" up there:

Sometimes local kids would help us patrol... constantly calling out "Taliban! Taliban!" and then laughing hysterically when we investigated:

Handstand:

Village kid, Logar:

On patrol across what later turned out to be a Soviet minefield. Sigh:

Lt Fuzz, thank you for your service. Thanks also for sharing the pics.

As for the link in post 1, I found the stuff about the dog fighting pretty disturbing. What a backwards country....sad.
