Pierre,
Looking good. Sounds like you are still having too much fun!

Use to go to Moreton as a kid but preferred Fraser Island.

Hope you were not too affected by the flooding.

Working on performance...

One other niggling issue that any 1HZ owner will experience is the lack of power from the normally aspirated engine. Through the local 4WD competition scene, I'd met a local diesel specialist. He is a mad Nissan 4.2 diesel man but works on all diesels. After putting the old cruiser up on the dyno, I had to laugh at the figures, take a guess...

All of 56 Hp at the rear wheels! Yep, you read that correctly. I'd done all the normal maintenance at this point including the following:
  • Replaced air filter
  • Replaced both fuel filters (main and aux tank filter).
  • Replaced the injectors
  • Regular oil and oil filter changes.

The dyno time allowed us to confirm what we both thought to be the problem. The injector pump was not producing the required pressure to crack the injectors at the precise time for injection. I had no choice but to lay down my hard earned for a reconditioned fuel injection pump. For those of you familiar with diesel engines will know that this was not a cheap alternative. So a new injection pump later and a few hours on the dyno netted an amazing 72 Hp at the rear wheels. Not huge by any means but that's a 26% increase from where I was. The old 80 has never run so well. I'd love to chuck on a turbo but to do it properly you are looking at $10 - 12K. Money better spent on fuel and food during our travels. :smiley_drive:

Colin,
Great to hear from you. Moreton is nice but Fraser is simply amazing. I was just thinking about our next trip there as I was typing the updates. The next trip is to Longreach, QLD to take in "Easter in the Outback".

We've managed to escape most of the flooding. The biggest issue for use was food supply...

I can honestly say that I'd never experienced anything like it. It could have been much much worse when compared to others in Queensland given the recent flooding events.

Love having fun 😊 in the 🌞 by the ⛵ and the ⏳
Pierre, you make us all jealous with the upgrades and mods you can do so easily (albeit they do cost) while living in OZ with so many diesel 80s on the road.

Wondering how much your 80 weighs now that you have a water tank suited for an army. That might have an effect on your pick-up and go given you are only turning 72 HP at the wheels.

I am surprised that a turbo would be 10-12K as they are less than 1/2 that here in Canada. Having a turbo would certainly improve your power and your fuel economy as well as taking off some stress from your trani/transfer case.

But glad to see you are taking time to have some fun with the rig. Enjoy and thanks for keeping us posted. :costumed-smiley-007
