Working on performance...
One other niggling issue that any 1HZ owner will experience is the lack of power from the normally aspirated engine. Through the local 4WD competition scene, I'd met a local diesel specialist. He is a mad Nissan 4.2 diesel man but works on all diesels. After putting the old cruiser up on the dyno, I had to laugh at the figures, take a guess...
All of 56 Hp at the rear wheels! Yep, you read that correctly. I'd done all the normal maintenance at this point including the following:
- Replaced air filter
- Replaced both fuel filters (main and aux tank filter).
- Replaced the injectors
- Regular oil and oil filter changes.
The dyno time allowed us to confirm what we both thought to be the problem. The injector pump was not producing the required pressure to crack the injectors at the precise time for injection. I had no choice but to lay down my hard earned for a reconditioned fuel injection pump. For those of you familiar with diesel engines will know that this was not a cheap alternative. So a new injection pump later and a few hours on the dyno netted an amazing 72 Hp at the rear wheels. Not huge by any means but that's a 26% increase from where I was. The old 80 has never run so well. I'd love to chuck on a turbo but to do it properly you are looking at $10 - 12K. Money better spent on fuel and food during our travels. :smiley_drive:
