A Photographers vehicle?

What's a photographers vehicle? Whatever you've got. Quit dreaming about what you don't have and go out and shoot. This thread has lots of cool trucks but the more you spend on the vehicle the less time and money you've got to go and photograph. If you care about the photography...at all...

I've got three kick ******** Land Rovers in the driveway, and you know what I drive to go photograph 95% of the time? Yep...the TDI Golf.

Yep. I put a bunch of miles on a 1987 Honda Accord. Did a bunch of shooting and articles with that car. God that was a fun car. Now I drive a Chevy Lumina. About as exciting as this pen on my desk but it just works. Actually its better than the accord since it has a huge trunk to hide everything in there. Doesn't get as good MPG but its never gotten stuck!

I once photographed in motion with the car, but since then I built my own device for the minivan consisting of aluminum tubes and remote control.

i chuckle a bit at the notion of a "photographer" vehicle.. as if that's on par with a carpenter's vehicle... have you guys watched the best nat geo photographers at work? single camera body, a few lenses in a small pouch...

The best landscape photographers get to their obscure destinations not in a vehicle..

Well if I ever showed up with one camera body for an assignment it would be the last assignment I would get, beginners do that and usually are looking for a new career after a breakdown. I know no serious shooter that is doing photography for a living that would only take one camera, including NG photographers.

Also most landscape photographers that I know use a vehicle. Takes a long time to walk across a province or a state to get to the wilderness.

At times I feel like I'm a truck driver... so much driving from one location to another.

After having a jeep, unimog, and now a 4x4 van i'd say the best thing is something with a lot of storage room.

I can personally attest to the fact that photographers whether they are a still life, fashion, landscape, or travel photographer carry a lot of equipment. Even James Nachtwey dogging bullets in war zones carries multiple bodies and lenses.

as for our film we've got still cameras for astro-timelapse shots, digital cinema cameras, a million tripods, dollies, cranes, motion control rigs, not to mention lenses from 15mm-400mm.

pro's carry a lot of gear not because we want to lug it all around to show off but you have to have the tools to get the right shot. Sometimes you can go handheld with a tiny lens, sometimes you need to break out the big guns that require every tool in the box.

From his Bio:

Joe McNally is an internationally acclaimed photographer whose career has spanned 30 years and included assignments in over 50 countries. He has shot cover stories for TIME, Newsweek, Fortune, New York, Entertainment Weekly, The New York Times Sunday Magazine, and Men's Journal. He has been at various times in his career a contract photographer for Sports Illustrated, a staff photographer at LIFE, and, currently, an ongoing 25-year contributor to the National Geographic, shooting numerous cover stories for those publications. His advertising and commercial clients include FedEx, Sony, Nikon, Land's End, General Electric, MetLife, Adidas, American Ballet Theater, Epson, and the Wildlife Conservation Society. Whether he is capturing individuals or large-scale assignments, McNally's photographs inform the viewer with their artistry and compassion, telling us stories elicited by his great communicative skills and captured through his lens.

Joe was listed by American Photo as one of the 100 Most Important People in Photography and described by the magazine as “perhaps the most versatile photojournalist working today”.

He travels in a Bus, I think a Prevost to carry his equipment to assignment.....******** I agree with PhotoMike, imagine you hire this acclaimed photographer and he shows up with one camera and two lenses on assignment

We should probably ask Scott and the rest of the Expedition's 7 Team what vehicles they're using to document their travels. In the end, the vehicle is what gets us to the location, so without said vehicle, most of these photos wouldn't be possible.

So they're walking around the world to get these stunning photos they've been showing us?? Are all these drool worthy Toyota's they're using just a giant camera bag then??

One other thing to add about not needing a vehicle. Today, at least for me, my vehicle is my office, storage and home away from home. In my vehicle I store gear, clothes, food and misc supplies. Also my vehicle is my digital darkroom, I can develop my images and send them to my client from anyplace I shoot. So yes I do need a vehicle.

I don't disagree with your statement. A rolling camera case with 30lbs of equipment fits fine in a Geo Metro. CF tripod? there's a trunk for that.

Again, look at NG photogs on assignments.. they walk around with minimum gear...

I will agree that this guy probably needs a dedicated vehicle solution

My D90 serves me well in a few ways. I have a nice packing solution with stand cases and pelican cases. All fits in the back. I can stand on the roof rack for extra elevation, solar for pretend power supply, and can go just about anywhere. And most importantly, I've had a number of art directors and other clients geek out upon seeing the Rover!

Find a Pure Sinewave Inverter and have it hardwired to an auxiliary battery that is still charged off the alternator. This way you can charge laptops, phones, cameras...etc when the truck isn't running, but still have a starting battery to get you started and out of there

Might be a good idea to have a solar panel wired to the bank of batteries to keep them topped off if on location for long periods or when the truck is just parked. If it is above 5 watts in size, then make sure to have a Charge Controller wired in so you dont overcharge the batteries. All of this can be done for fairly inexpensive

We just had all of this done on our boat for this specific reason

Extra Optima Blue Top AGM Battery = $200
5 Watt Solar Panel = $45
Battery switch and wiring = $50
Extra 12volt outlet for charging phones and other accessories = $20

Never having to worry about being left stranded or without power = Priceless
