Printed the Cherry county map on numerous 11x17 sheets yesterday...where's my Scotch tape???
The Nebraska Sandhills are a 1000% better than what you saw. Simply an incredible region. You have to explore it to understand. My pictures do little justice to what you will feel when you are there on a summer day looking, listening, and smelling the Sandhills prairie. Also even farther NW in Nebraska is the interesting Pine Ridge/Fort Robinson/Toadstool State Park region.
There is at the Nebraska National Forest at Halsey, NE. Also would be at the Samuel R. McKelvie National Forest which is SW of Valentine, NE. A lot of the narrow one-lane sand/paved scenic ranch roads throughout the Sandhills would be gorgeous on one but I don't know the Nebraska laws or regs on doing that. Also at the very large Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area north of Ogalala, NE there are many, many miles of wide sandy beaches along this huge lake that may be open to riding. It would be best to google or call these places and check. I'm sure there are ATV Clubs in Nebraska that could give you info but I don't know the name of any but that could be researched. Here is a picture from off the dam area looking westward on Lake McConaughy which is about 25 miles long.Is there any ATV/UTV riding available in this area that you know of?
I did not camp as I have gotten old and quite wimpy but there would be some great places to camp all over the Sandhills. I stayed in little motels in the tiny ranching towns of Hyannis, Mullen, and Thedford which are all along Hy. 2. Infact I just got back from visiting the Sandhills again for 5 days. Took many different back byways than what I did in early June. Lots of different wildflowers in bloom than in early June though I missed the one I most wanted to see which is Shell leaf Penstemon. It had come and gone between my 2 Sandhills trips. Simply amazing country.Very interesting country. Were you able to camp out there?
