Hello guys and gals, I've been a member of this forum for years. Just haven't posted much. Backstory army for 10 years, got out with no plan was broke had an H3 Alpha that I traded in for a crappy little car to try to get out of debt. My ball is rolling again and this time I'm looking into the full size market. My budget will be around 20-25kish. I started by looking at 2013 and newer trucks found a decent selection in that price range. Your 1500's, F150s, and so forth. I am not truck biased at all, but then I noticed higher mileage 2012-14 Raptors in that price range as well as 2016 Rebels. Mind you with greater mileage then your normal z71s, bighorn, fx4 trucks. I'm torn between buy and build or get a truck that already has offroad prowess. So I figured I'd post a poll and see what the community thinks. Clearly in that budget mileage will vary, with the Raptors and Rebels I found being around 150,000 or greater miles.

How much driving do you plan to do and how long do you plan to keep the vehicle for?
What kind of driving do you want to do with it?
If you want to keep a long time I'd go for whatever you can get with the lowest mileage, OR, one of them you can confirm is mostly easy highway miles.

If you could score a Raptor that was not abused and well cared for in the $20-25000 range in any year that would be my choice. They still get stupid money and some are really abused but find a grandpa truck and that would be the way to go. One thing I saw when eyeballing used Raptors is they get driven. All had high miles for their age. That tells me they are fun to drive and reliable.

If it was me, I would wait until next year. Used truck prices are way to high right now.

Yes, that is a good point. I do / don't want that to change next year, lol
Question too, are you paying cash or financing? If financing the difference in payment between a new and used might not be that different with the current offers on new trucks.

It’s all go to depend on what you feel comfortable in. We had a base model work truck that had the basic seats that only had four adjustments. My truck is maxed for options and I’ve got the ten way power seats and had a much more comfortable driving position in my truck. Plus more of the comfort gimmicks like a back up camera, downhill assist and things like that. Both trucks were F150s in the same generation: ‘09-14. Mine is a ‘13 FX4 Lux, while the work truck was an ‘09 and the first year of that generation.
So maybe look at when the last rework was of that generation (Dodge or GM) and decide where you want to be in their reliability process, even though this plays a much smaller role than it used to. There will have been refinements and improvements as the generation moves further.
I’ve driven all of the big three and have found that even for a ‘13, mine has a lot of amenities that the others didn’t for the same year. However, a newer base model F150 has the majority of the same electronic gimmicks, but fewer of the high end comforts like leather, multi-adjustment power seats, dual climate control and such.

Not sure if it matters but by pure accident I discovered my October 2019 build Expedition 3.5 quietly got a cast aluminum oil pan and as far as I can tell likely some sort of updates for the Cam phaser issue that affected the 3.5.
From what I could glean from online forums it sounded like these were quietly done possibly mid ish 2019 calendar yr. Its possible the F150’s saw them sooner given its a far more important vehicle to Ford than the Expedition ?.

This will probably be my forever truck well until flight school is complete, and I get to the commercial stage of my life. It will be daily drive i work 10 miles from my house. I also live in Colorado Springs and live being in the mountains. I've seen H1s up there but I'm a bit concerned about the Raptor width. I'd probably say keep it for a minimum of 5 years.
That was my thinking as well and being in Colorado ya the trails are small but I believe it's the only one with a factory locker and such, so braving all elements will be a plus. You're right they seem to be driven and pretty hard unless you get a grandpa one or the guy you see on the freeway doing 5 under trying to conserve gas.
That's actually kinda the intention. I'm just trying to get a heads up on vehicles pros and cons and such. You are right I found a fully loaded laramie for 18k with lower miles on auto trader it was fine the next day. This was over the summer now I'm finding work trucks for that price.
Financing my flight instructor just bought a single cab ram 2020 and it cost him 32k here in colorado. Trucks and suvs cost so much here.

That's almost what I paid for a crew cab, STX, F150 in 2017...lol. Sounds like you need to take a road trip to somewhere else to buy a truck...haha.

Trucks are high right now but inventory is up and prices are starting to drop. The longer you can hold out the better. I'm shipping right now but I'm being patient.
Trucks are more expensive in Colorado. By the time you factor in flights and driving it home the difference is smaller. Also, I've flown to Oklahoma to buy a truck and ended up having to buy a flight home due to an honest mistake on the sellers part. Seeing the truck before you buy is worth a little extra money.

None of the above. I am 100% on board with buying within budget and staying out of debt. However, used truck market is stupid (STUPID) expensive right now.
I’d have a hard time paying $25k for a truck with over 100k miles. Or even 75k miles. I’d much rather put that money towards a new base model truck...

Buy one with 170k miles for $8-12k, drive it for 3-4 years, save up, sell it and get a new(er) truck with less miles.
