Do you know what the first year for the GTO was? Most people, even most car enthusiasts, do not know...
We had that discussion already in another thread, lol. I said it depended on if you were referring to the Pontiac or the Ferrari. I do know both.

But, how do you know I just didn't google the answers?

Thanks.

Pretty interesting:

Built on an all new completely undercoated torque tube chassis instead of traditional C channel rails. The NewAire benefits from an extremely lower ride height, thereby lowering the center of gravity and rewarding the driver with superb handling. The ride height is only 13" and actually lowers itself from there.

The next NewAire innovation: Independent 6-wheel air suspension complete with 6-wheel anti-lock brakes.

This coach was more expensive then Newmars own 45' class leading Essex model.

Wish they made something similar today.

But understand why they wouldn't:

The Newaire model of RV that the owner of Newmar hoped would revolutionize the industry, ended up costing over $200,000 new and only a few were ever sold. ...

The cost of developing the Newaire model RV nearly bankrupt the Newmar company and it is reportedly still cursed by both the management and employees of the company.

That Newaire reminds me of the Vixen motorhomes. Built for 3 or 4 years, '86 to '89. BMW diesel engine and manual transaxle. I wanted one so bad when they were new but could not afford it; still have the brochure I sent away for, though.

EDITED: I'll be dang, that's what I get for posting before reading the entire thread!

GTO or "Gran Turismo Omologato," was first used in 1962 with the Ferrari 250, GTO

In the States, Pontiac took the 1964 LeMans and badged it with a 326 ci V8 with upgrades as the Pontiac GTO in 1965.

"GTO" along with "GT" boils down to a grandioso marketing ploy to define an exciting image of one driving something more special than an over powered compact vehicle. Not all higher performance cars were using the designation but did fall into a class for competition in racing as the GT Class. An example in the '60's would have been the Jaguar XKE.

Your friend is right. Gran Turismo Omologato translates from Italian into English as Grand Touring Homologated. The original GTO (the 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO) was a homologation special, intended for FIA-sanctioned Group-3 GT road racing competition.

John Delorean was so enamored with the 250 GTO, that when Pontiac needed a name for the performance package on it's Tempest two years later in 1964, he chose "GTO", which is silly, because the Tempest is not a Grand Touring car, it was not eligible for Group-3, and it was never homologated for any FIA road racing class.

The Pontiac Tempest "GTO" was a mid-size 4-seat passenger car with a 4-barrel V8 engine and a top speed of about 115 mph (about what a modern Toyota Prius can do). The REAL GTO, the Ferrari 250 GTO, was a hand-built Italian sports car with a 12-barrel V12 engine and a top speed of about 175 mph.

The Ferrari 250 GTO is also the world's most valuable car. They have sold for as much as 80 million dollars. The Pontiac Tempest "GTO"...not so much...
Please, the Tempest LeMans, the 1964 LeMans with the 326 ci V8 got a 4 speed or auto tranny with other upgrades in "65 for the Pontiac GTO, mine was marina blue with blue interior. :)

some if it is spin..... most of it is spin
we evolve, what we once considered touring is just transport on the interstate today in anything.
what we consider an overland expedition today was once just everyday transport.
but GRAND TOURING is GRAND TOURING, high horsepower, leather and AC with a luxury hotel at the end of every day.

No one did it better than W.O.Bentley.
