I finally get a hold of my 88 mj today (maybe tomorrow). I've seen kits to add anti lock breaks but my father in-law says it can't be done because its to old. Any thoughts and or segestion.

Never heard of such a thing, I would think that it would be overly complicated as well.

You could adapt ABS from a newer XJ Cherokee but the ChryCo systems of that vintage suck so I wouldn't bother.

An aftermarket race system is going to be quite expensive.

You could try adapting junk yard parts but it is a lot of hassle for debatable gains. The biggie in my mind would be getting the MC rod to pedal interface correct from some random, applicable MC while not having a welded or poorly bolted connection interfacing the parts.

Search NAXJA. One of the members swapped in a Dana 44 while retaining ABS. If you know what you are doing that will be enough data to get you started.

Why would you want to? The first generation Rubicons and Dodges with the power wagon packages didnt come with ABS because it's usually not wanted in off highway situation. I find it annoying on my JK.

The only way I would even consider this in a MJ was if I were to do a complete 97-01 swap (dash, wiring, ECU and front clip/ doors). Otherwise in general I am not a fan of the jeep ABS systems. Had a 96xj with it and it was more of a hindrance than safety/ benefit.

I pulled the relays for my ABS on my 98 XJ. I wouldn't call it horrible but its not much better than horrible. I still need to pull all the plumbing out of the engine compartment.

My '95 YJ came with ABS and when I swapped in an rear XJ D44 i had the tone rings removed from my D30's shafts and pressed onto the D44's. I also had the sensors swapped over. My point is it can be done and i have no issues on or offroad. Anyone who says ABS sucks let them have their opinion - just remember even the newest Jeeps run ABS. Find the parts and swap them in at a good shop (tone rings, sensors, ABS pump, ABS computer, etc).

I didn't say ABS sucks. I said ChryCo ABS of that vintage sucks. Try trail braking hard into a corner while hitting rough parts of the track and you'll understand what I mean.
