Adventures and Ramblings of a Lexus GX460 ("Land Cruiser Lite" URJ150)

I've been researching and looking at cars since early september. I have a 1999 4Runner which I absolutely love but it's just a tad too small for our growing family. (It's currently for sale BTW.... ). I looked at the 2014+ 4Runner and whilst I love the exterior the interior left a lot to be desired. Plus there was almost no point in buying a used 4Runner as they pretty much don't lose any value from new (a 2014 with 30k miles for $32k?..... Theyre $36k new........ ) I test drove a new 2016 trail 4Runner on three separate occasions and racked up almost 300 miles test driving it and liked it less each time. For the past 10 years I was sure my next car was going to be a new 4Runner. I'm still a little disappointed and sad at the interiors of the 5th gen 4Runners. So through all my research I came across the Lexus GX 470 and 460s. At first I was considering the 470 but didn't like the interior as much as the 460s. I did a bit more research and learned that the X460 is based on the Land Cruiser 150 (which is also what the 5th gen 4Runner is based on). It shares the same chassis and suspension as the 4Runner but is built much more plush inside (it's a Lexus after all). I looked and researched about 30 GX460s across the US and ended up finding one 4 miles (yup 4... ) from my house. It had a bit more miles than I wanted but it had meticulous service history and records and was in great overall condition. Plus it was the Peridot Mica (green) color I was looking for. Last month there were about 1200 GX460s for sale within my price range and had less than 60k miles..... only 2 of them were Peridot Mica. I have owned silver cars for the past 16 years and planned on buying another silver car. If you told me I would be in love with a green car 3 months ago I would have called you crazy! But I love the green. I picked up the GX last weekend and love it; even with a bit of a rough start (the battery was dead the next morning.... after they told me they put a brand new battery in it.... which the dealership didn't actually do....) I already had a Rhino Rack pioneer platform rack sitting in the basement waiting for it and a few other small items (replacement LED bulbs for any bulb that wasn't LED.) I'm planning on swapping over a few items from my 4Runner and adding a fewer nicer things. I plan on doing a very mild lift (1.5-2") and fairly conservative sized tires. Skid plates will probably be on the list (since it won't be raised much) and maybe some driving spot lights. I really like the factory running boards and have been talking/planning with a buddy about reinforcing/protecting the boards (aka "slim" sliders/plates under the running boards??)

The GX460 is a great size. It's not 200 series huge, nor did it command the resale price of what 200 series LCs are going for these days. The 4.6l engine paired with the 6 speed auto transmission runs great and over the past week of 50/50 city/highway driving has managed to produce 18.1 average MPGs. There's clearly not the accessory market of the 100 or 200 series trucks but with a bit of research you can find things that swap from the 5th gen 4Runners or things you can get imported from the Prado 150 overseas.

Nice rig. Enjoy it.

I really like the GX 460, drove one a few weeks ago and I am leaning this way. I dont need to haul a bunch of people so all the seating in the back will come out and be outfitted with a camp build out. Great color BTW!

Roof Rackage...... There's so much room for activities!

Rhino Rack Platform Rack- Done.... ... ... For now anyway. I'm still on the fence if I want to go up 1 size bigger on the platform. I got the 76" x 48" and I'm kinda wishing I went with the 84" x 48". I would push the rack back 2" and push the additional 6" forward. My RTT is 48"x56" so I would love the 28" of front rack verses the 20". I have two pelican cases (which are 20"x16") and they would go in front of the RTT on the platform.

Got the GX all cleaned up and the Rhino Rack platform mounted up. I modified a Yakima fairing I had laying around and bolted it to the front. The rack definitely needed a faring to reduce wind noise. Not sure if I'll end up keeping the rack on full time or just when needed. We'll see how well the Rhino Rack platform holds up over the long run (I'm concerned about the plastic corners and plastic towers). From what I've gathered; Rhino Rack stands behind their warranty and "takes care" of it's customers. I compared the Eezi-Awn K9, Front Runner, and Gobi racks before I pulled the trigger on the Rhino Rack. The Front Runner was a close second but I didn't like the "lip" that runs around the perimeter. The "lip" would have forced me to buy additional mounts for the roof top tent which I didn't want to do. The K9 rack seems like its better built (fully welded) and a bit more beefy, but it was also more expensive and required drilling and riveting tracks to the roof (same as the Front Runner). I liked the complete bolt on/bolt off ability of the Rhino Rack. Plus eTrailer.com was running a killer Black Friday deal on the Rhino Rack products (if you called them) and I ended up getting the complete setup shipped to me (3 day shipping also) for about half what the K9 and Front Runners were.

Plus as an added bonus I can still mount my Yakima Control towers to the rack if I want to haul bikes when the RTT isn't in action.

Let there be light!

(I'm not sure why a new $60k truck didn't come with HIDs to begin with (they were optional, and expensive from what I gather) but the GX really does need more light...))

On the inside:
I kept this pretty simple (and cheap). Most of the lighting inside is already LED (all the dash and instrument, foot-well lighting, and switches). The remaining incandesent bulbs were only the dome and door lights (which were all 168/194 bulbs) There were 12 total for dome and accessory lighting. I picked up a 20 pack of "bright white" bulbs on amazon for $9. <-- BIG money!) For the money they put out really good amount of light. They are not the "SUPER-DUPER-100 TIME THE BRIGHTNESS OF THE SUN" bright that some LEDs claim to be, but for interior lighting they're great. The color isn't bluish either. It's a nice clear white.

On the Exterior:
I threw the 194 LEDs into the pond lights (4 of them) and they work pretty well. I may get a brighter set of bulbs for these lights. The cheapo 194s are OK but a little more exterior lighting never hurt. I'm considering replacing the two pond lights (on each side) with a full length LED strips. I'd like to be able to turn them on and off separately from when entering/exiting the car or use them as "rock" lights. I may play with a two-way switch for this application.

I had a few really bright amber 194 bulbs laying around and tossed them into the parking light within the front headlight housings. I'm a big fan of a sharp bright orange parking light paired with HID headlights. I like the contrasting colors.

Headlights:
I used one of the Innovited H11 55w HID plug and play kits. I had a bit of trouble with these only because I didn't realize that H11 bulbs are available in both short and long variants. The kit came with the long bulbs, and of course I needed the shorties. The kits are completely plug and play and I've had really good luck with them in the past (8 kits in 5 cars). I lucked out with the headlights because even though they are completely enclosed (the round trap door keeps out mother-earth) I had room inside the housing to stuff the ballast and wiring. I usually order the HID kits in the 5000K temp color but they only had the H11 short bulbs in 4300K. (I'll try to get a decent night time picture to show the end-result)

Pardon the bad picture but it's really hard to take night time/headlight pictures with an iphone..... In person the bulbs are a bit whiter. No yellow at all.

Fog/Driving Lights;
These also use an H11 bulb so once again I ordered up the Innovited HID 55w kit. But this time I ordered amber(ish) bulbs. These were the 3000K temp color so help give a bit of contract whilst driving at night. The color isn't exactly as pictured (more yellow than amber) so I'm not sure if I'll stick with this or end up putting amber covers on the housings. Time will tell.

Same deal here; pictures at night are hard! The fogs are a bit amberish but mostly yellow. I'm on the fence with this color....

I haven't done anything with the high-beams yet. Lexus does this stupid thing where it uses the high-beam bulbs at half power (6V) for it's daytime running lights. Because of this I can't run a plug and play HID kit for the high-beams AND keep the daytime running lights turned on. Luckily, Lexus does allow you to simply program the daytime running lights on or off. So in the end, I may just program them off, and install the HIDs.

Driving Spot Lights:
My plan for these is to pick up a set of the 9" 185w LED light kits. As much as I'd LOVE to support ARB and not support knock-offers, the ARBs are just ridiculously priced (in my opinion) and out of my budget. I'm sure they are much much much better quality but in the end, I'm not spending the $1400 on miniature wanna-be suns. I have to fabricate up a little mounting bracket to be able to get them into a good sturdy position up front. I want something that has good distance for nighttime interstate cruising.

LED Light Bar(?):
We'll see... ... ... I'm really on the fence if I want to do an LED light bar. Every time I see a honda civic drive by with a light bar bolted to its bumper, or VW golf with one bolted to its wooden roof rack I cringe. They really have a "bro" thing killing it.
Functionality speaking; I don't do a lot of night trail driving so do I even need one? Or am I just installing it to be cool. I'm not sure.

Back up Flood Light:
I had a small 6" 18w light bar laying around so I bolted it up just under the Rhino Rack. It fits in nice and discrete. To keep the wiring simple I'm planning on using the 7-pin towing outlet (factory installed) and just wiring the backup light to a 7-pin plug. This way I can just run the wires down and plug it in. I thought about putting a switch on it for when we're camped, but I think something less "direct" would be easier on the eyes and more functional (LED strip lights).

Organizliness is next to godliness..... (or something like that)

Started working on the drawers for the back. I lucked out and managed to retro-fit the setup I had in my 4Runner. The 4Runners cargo area was 37" wide and 42" deep. The GX is 42" wide and 37" deep. Go figure. I unscrew the cabinet base and rotated the drawer sliders. I finally got around to adding the roller bearings (I actually needed 5" of "gaps" to make it work so it worked out perfectly. I only ended up having to buy about $35 worth of lumber (new back panel, and new faces) to finish it up.

See ya later third row! You'll be missed once or twice a year. The drawers we'll use all spring/summer/fall.

Surprisingly the folding third row takes about almost 9 inches of height. My drawers are based on 1"x8" boards (which are 7.5") and when you add two layers of 1/2" plywood..... boom 8.5" total drawer height. This worked out perfectly so now I can still fold down the 2nd row and have a completely flat cargo area.

Test fitting before paint and carpet:

UhkBumY.jpg

The paints drying and I'm still trying to find some sort of matching carpet. I still need to decide what pulls and a latch I'll use.... details, details, details.......

I'll update the post when I have a final complete drawer.

Very nice, Love the new ride - I really like the idea of a GX, all the fun and looks of a LC without the price tag.
