Air Filter Location

Hi All

Thanks to Skifreak's recent post which reminded me, I want to replace the current air filter because its 1. rusty metal , 2. too heavy, 3. in a **** spot for water ingress.

I'm leaning toward a plastic donaldson canister style filter with a forward facing air ram but I can't decide on where to mount it. If I mount it on the roof rack above the cab I have to deal with undoing it when tilting the cab forward. If I mount it high on the camper I have to deal with the movement from the flexible camper mounts.

Any thoughts on which would be the better location?

What about mounting the canister itself low, in an easy-to-service spot, then run a generously-sized snorkel w/ a forward-facing air ram at the top of the cab? If the whole intake tract length is from the top of the cab down to the engine, whether the actual canister is at the top or even down next to the engine won't make a difference in performance or filtering efficiency, as long as you use a very efficient, free-flowing filter.
And on that subject, can you get the Donaldson PowerCore filter? Extremely efficient, low restriction. Since Ford started using them on the SuperDuty F-Series, they've done a fantastic job. Go online and look up Donaldson PowerCore for the full skinny on it. I think you'll like it.

Hey Shannon... you could take a leaf out of ATW's book and mount the filter in the camper. You can then run the snorkel ether inside the camper box or on the outside. This negates the issue of having a disconnect when you tilt the cab.

Shannon, check out the Fleetguard range too .... and importantly compare replacement filter prices. Definitely go plastic........having had a rust flake destroy a turbo many years ago, I wouldn't consider anything but.....also run stainless pipe with turbo clamps after the air cleaner, bellows connecting to the air cleaner to allow for movement of the engine. Rubber mounting the aircleaner will reduce reverberation noise......rubber mounting the snorkel also cuts noise too if youre looking at the ultimate installation..... it might be close to your passengers ear when driving.

Thanks for the replies, looks like mounting it on/in the camper is the go. Now to find a suitable canister and some room!
