The road was fine. No washout and all the snow was gone. There was a "dirty girls" 4wheeler run coming down as I was leaving however, My wife warned me about dirty girls. Made for a little traffic and we both made an effort of get some of the beer cans off the side of the road. I got a least a case!

Installed a set of fenders from sierra 4x4 trailers. They really make the stock tire size seem out of place, but they are flat and should accommodate and up sizing of tires.

A few photos from the NW overland rally. The trailer pulled great behind the 80 series and we logged over 400 miles on mostly highway time with the trailer. So far I am very happy with how it tracks, but I would still like to build a basket on the front or add some water/jerry can holders.

The Scenery was amazing!

I am happy with the trailer although I would like a privy room for the wife and kids to get some additional privacy. I think I might build an awning mount and install an 8 footer. I head the ARB will should have privacy walls for their awnings by Spring of 2013! Ill have to wait and see.

I am looking at upgrading the axle in my little trialer to a 3500 lbs dexter axle with electric brakes, Rancho cj3 springs, and toyota tacoma steel rims with a -30mm or 1.25 " offset. I am trying to figure out what lenght to order the axle in and this is what I have figured so far. My fender width is 63" and my offset on 7 inch rims is 1.25. So I take the 7 inch rims and divide that in half and add the offset the times by 2 and subtract that from my fender width to get my maximum axle width, correct? 7 / 2 + 1.25 = 4.75 (this is the width from the outer edge of the rim to the hub face.) 4.75 x 2 = 9.5 (this is the width of both rims) 63 - 9.5 = 53.5 (this equals the maximun width of my axle hub face in order to get the rim of the wheel to not stick out past the fenders. Anyone confused? Me too.

7 (wheel width) / 2 (divided to find centerline) + 1.25 (negatice offset of wheel) = 4.75 (hub face to outer rim)
4.75 (hub face to outer rim) x 2 (2 wheels duh) = 9.5
63 (fender width) - 9.5 (total fo 2 wheels hub face to rim) = 53.5 (maximum width of axle to clear fenders)

Does this look correct?

Man, I'm not sure I'm following all that, but I just went through this and here's how I figured it.

Trailer width (41")
+
Wheel Offset (4" x 2= 8")
+
Tire bulge over the wheel rim (2" x 2 = 4")
+
Clearance between tire and frame (2" x 2 = 4")

Total= 57"

That's probably an inch or so wider than I actually need, but I figured a little wider would be better than to short. Just in case I change my wheel/tire set up in the future.

ETA....I just picked up the axle today. I haven't installed it, but I do have it sitting on there and looks about right to me.

Could you share any update on how the wider tires have worked out?

Not yet but I should have some information here shortly. I'm just waiting on some rancho cj3 front springs before I bolt everything on. Also I got some free 265/75/16 Cooper ATRs so these will do until I pony up and buy some tires that match the size on my LX450.

I started working the axle. I used ranching springs and was about to find a bushing locally that I can use in the leave spring to mount the supplied shackles from the axle. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1363549901.985793.jpg

Here's a photo of the tires and rims next to the trailer.

Back on black! Not sure what the problem is but I fell some resistance when I plugged it in to my Tacoma for a test drive. There will need to be some further inspection required.

Very curious as to what springs you used. Did they fit in the stock locations? Did you make your own shackles or use the C shackles. My stock springs are pretty sagged out, so I need to look at options. Yours is looking really nice!

Cheers!

I used rancho cj3 front springs.

The shackles are from the dexter axle that I ordered. They make another pair of springs that have threaded holes so that you can use the stock c shackles, but I am not sure of the part number for those.

I also need to reroute the wiring so it doesn't get crushed. Surprisingly the bumpstop mounts that came with the axle fit the holes on the trailer frame.

Thanks for the quick reply! I am sprung over on mine, so those would put me way up too high...a bit tippy I fear! Keep us posted on the brake set up...I think I will follow suit on that for sure..I love trailer brakes!! Whose controller are you using?

Cheers!

I love your build man! I'm currently building a 5X8 trailer for my offroad and camping travels. I bought a old landscaping trailer and I've been wondering if the short leaf packs are going to work. How do you go about deciding what length and weight of leaf to go with?

Stuff....more stuff.

I have got to be nearing the end of this build as I can't image bolting or welding anything else onto this beast. About the last major component I am missing from an adventure/expo/camping trailer is power.

Here is a list of what I have done this spring.

  • Awning Mount
  • Wings/Bumpers
  • Propane mount
  • Kitchen table
  • Firewood/Cooler rack
  • Bottle Opener
  • Full Size Spare Tire

Here is the awning and kitchen table getting some use. Never mind the mess. I was in the midst of cooking street taco for our group.
