great build

this is just great! I love to see what guys can fab up, as it gives me inspiration to tackle some basic things like rock bars and rear bumper/tire carrier. great job. subscribing to this thread for sure!

That's how I got started - I wanted some rock sliders for my Toyota T100, and nobody made them. Bought a little 120V Mig welder and an angle grinder, and with the use of a tube bender that I borrowed from a buddy I went to town. You learn from every project, and (hopefully) make less mistakes as you go :)

Why, power steering, of course :)

I'll be running hydroboost brakes and power steering (all stock Chevy setup) on the scout.

this one isn't for sale because it's going on my FJ40; but they are available

Picture isn't showing up ...

I'm sure its doable with scout parts, but to be honest parts support is so poor for these trucks that I feel better using a common Saginaw PS box that I can source at pretty much any auto parts store or junkyard around the country. Same goes for engine parts (TBI 350 Chevy V8), brakes, axles, etc. I have put a decent amount of effort into trying to make replacement parts easy to source no matter where I end up on the side of the road, not to mention using stock parts when I can.

I'll have to see if I can find a picture of the stock mount for the Scout steering box, even if I were to try to use it I would have rebuilt the mounts pretty much in the same way. It was just a plate bracket hanging out in mid air, and I think was already bent on my truck.

I don't know what to do about the picture, it's showing up on my end... the unit is saginaw, just the shaft to the pitman arm is longer. I had a choice of a FJ60 PS unit, a saginaw - all the way on the front frame horn, or this....

and I almost feel guilty using such a hard-to-find part, but the guilt will go away quickly when I don't pull a muscle trying to get 40" tires to turn on rock

Now i see the picture, thanks. You have a build thread for that FJ40?

I think that's a Scout II box? My stock one was inside the frame rail. These early Scouts have really wide frames, I'd have tire clearance and steering shaft problems trying to run the box outside. Its making a lot of packaging tricky, including limiting my steering angle due to tire/frame contact, to the point where I sort of have a plan in the back of my mind to hack off and rebuild the front of the frame about 6" narrower. For reference my frame measures 35" across the outside, where as an Early Bronco Frame is only 29.25".

It is a Scout II box. It was your posting about putting the box so far in front that made me wonder if my solution would work for you as well (my solution means what I'm using, someone else had the grey matter to think this up) I've just started on it - it's suspension will likely be a 3 link front/4 link rear eventually... but it's no where near that point yet. With that said, here's the main site where I have been posting my build

Cool, thanks for the link.

I think the picture makes it look like the frame rails are hanging way out in front of the truck, in reality the PS box is almost completely behind the grille. I just need to notch out a little bit, shouldn't be very visible.

I am planning to build a hybrid plate/tube front bumper to house a Warn 9500 that I picked up a few months back, which will help to give the frame rails support right by the PS box, which the engineer in me likes :)

Maybe so, on the FJ40, the entire box is in front of the grill - I never liked that because if that rail got hit, the steering is going to do something unexpected.

I bought a generic winch plate and welded it to my frame rails on my H3 Hummer... worked slick. I started with bolting, but, because the frame rails are a hydroformed box, couldn't keep the plate from moving a bit and clunking (it probably won't go anywhere, but...)

IH sourced its power steering from Saginaw. The pumps and such are fully interchangeable with what GM used. Some trucks used a smaller cylinder shaped reservoir but Scouts all had the "canned ham" style pump and res unite. I pulled everything off a 78 scout when I did an axle swap and pwr steering upgrade on my '70 800. A great source if you haven't been on it is http://binderplanet.com

Thanks!

If you need any brackets for the 3 link and are interested in the ones I designed, let me know - I still have a set of parts kicking around here somewhere :)

Yep I'm familiar with binderplanet.

I have all of the accessory drive parts off the 5.7 Chevy V8 from when I pulled it out of a running truck, so I'm good with the PS pump I've got.

.

Yes, that would be quite helpful... it would also help make up my mind on how I'm going to suspend the suspension - I'm not sure I'm up for $1200 in fox coil overs... but this could be the bit that tilts it that way
