I'm starting to rethink my tire choice. I have 4.10 gears and based upon the reading I have been doing; without regearing, should I go to a maximum of 33" tires?

Everytime I start reading, I get confused about gearing v.s. tire size. I could use some help on this one!

I personally think that 33" tires are fine, I don't "rock crawl" or do anything hard core enough to warrant that tire size. I have 285/70/17 Duratracs <pic in the gallery above> If i have 16" rims i'd likely be running 255/85/16, Never needed to check out 18" rims so not too sure whats out there.

I think that a lot of people exagerate the whole gearing issue. With a 35" tire and 4.10 gears you aren't going to win any races, but with a properly calibrated speedo, you aren't going to be too bad off.

At the moment I am running the 2.5" Teraflex lift with shock spacers, and for the money it is a decent lift, definitely better than what Full Traction has out there, and it is only about $500. At times I would like more lift since I still get high centered every now and again, but it really isn't that big of a deal, and nothing a body lift would help with.

Other than that looks like a good list. I know that the MPAC racks are a nice way to help organize storage. I have three of them in the back of my Jeep, and one in the front and I have more areas to store stuff than I know what to do with. I like it for when the top is off though because I know that anything int eh bags is secured for off road use, and also won't blow out the back on the highway.

I agree, the gearing issue is definitely exaggerated. I ran 35's and 4.10's for a long time, and I found it to be fine. The only reason I re-geared was because I was doing lockers and I was going to have the diffs apart anyway. I went all the way to 5.13's and the difference was not as significant as everyone made me think it would be.

On 35's vs. 33's, yes there is a moderate capability gain for the 35's for sure, but purely from an aesthetic standpoint I think the 35's fit the vehicle better and the stock running gear seems to be a good match for them.

Well, I don't anticipate any major rock crawling or anything where I would need serious clearance. We will primarily be doing forest roads and mild off-road stuff. I just might settle on the 267/75-R16 Duratracs and be done with it. I only plan on doing a 2.5" lift at this point too. I still have 10/32 tread on the Grappler AT2 that I have so I have time to mull this one over.

First thing on the list thought is to install the Gobi rack that I ordered last week and order the M-PAC rack on the tailgate. I need to get my storage figured out first. From there I'll address the fridge, tranny cooler and brakes (they have been squeeling alot lately).

Even with just moderate forest roads and trails you will be scraping the belly on a four door JK. With a 2 door I would say that they are perfect for most stuff with the stock wheels and tires, but the extra 20" of wheelbase on the 4 door really needs at least 2.5" of suspension (preferably 3.5" for just that extra bit) and 35" tires.

I have 35's (BFG AT KO) on 16in AEV Bridgers with the Teraflex 2.5 lift and I have had no problems. I have a 6 spd with 4.10 gears. The speedo is off about 10 mph, but I'll fix that once I do the 5.7 Hemi install. The GOBI rack is a great choice, a little pricey, but I've got the Kargo master on mine. Got it for 150.00.

It is an auto with 4.10 gears.

My 08 was an Auto with 35 Km2's, full Rockhard skids, Mopar front and rear bumpers, plus a winch, so it was a heavy Jeep. I ran the Tera 2.5 kit with a 3/4 spacer up front, upper and lower control arms in the front as well as an adjustable track bar in the front. It lugged quite a bit on hills and it downshifted a lot on the highway just to hold a steady speed. I had a programmer and changed the setting for the 35's, didn't help much at all. It was OK to say the least but a little more gear would have been nice. I compared this to a JK on 37's with a 6 speed, running a 4.5 BDS kit, bumper, no skids. I thought the difference was night and day, I didn't see a need to change the gears on the 6 speed to keep up with traffic. It was an interesting comparison, I just felt like the auto was working harder than the 6 speed.

I know have a 2 door with 33's, 6 speed trans, winch, engine skid, etc, and see no need for gears with the 6 speed and 33's. Didn't notice much of a difference at all from stock performance, and I am getting an avg of 17 mpg with a high so far being 17.5 mpg. My speedo is dead on with my GPS.

So if you decide to go 35's which I totally think is the right look on the 4 doors, you way want to budget gears into your build. If you'd like something a little more mild, 33's would probably do the trick. OME or Tera both make great kit's I've tried both, I'm not running the Tera level kit with a slightly larger spacer up front to compensate for the winch weight.

Here's some of my JK's.

Sorry no pics of my new 2 door on 285 Duratrac's with the tera level kit, I'll work on that!
