Almost Didn’t Make It Back….

This is honestly the first report I've ever heard of a treadwright blowing out. They are not like big rig tire treads of the 80's-90's. They're fairly highly engineered products. I ran 3 sets on 2 different rigs with nary an issue. I'd still choose them.

I've heard lots of stories of other new brands, having high speed failures, however.

There were many things that came into play here:

-fully loaded rig
-possible damage from offroading
-high highway speeds (not to say he was speeding, 70 was probably the speed limit out there)
-possible over-correction (by no fault of his own)
-Sudden violent/unpredictable movement by the damaged/wheel tire.

This could have happened with any tire, dude.

This family did everything right, were blessed with the outcome they had, and are back on the road without much drama. Pure awesomeness.

I agree on all points. I'm not saying it's their fault and it's great nobody got seriously injured.

I still believe that retreads at highway speed in the heat is a recipe for disaster. You are using a used carcass, who knows how many miles, heat cycles or how it was treated in it's former life. Saving a couple hundred bucks is not worth it to me. Just because you get away with it doesn't mean it's a good idea.

Thank you so much for sharing the trip report, it was awesome! I really appreciate all the work people put into posting up a bunch of text and pics so we can take a virtual trip. Glad everything turned out ok and there was no permanent (physical or physcological) damage.

Again great report!

Here I was reading through a great trip report when I scroll down to the next post and photos......

.....insert an impressive string of explitives as I saw the rollover pics. I can't imagine the feeling you must have had. It would be one thing for me to be on a trip with other wheeling buddies and have an accident like that. Having it happen with my kids in the car would be a galactic difference. So glad to hear everyone was ok.

Take care of yourselves, there can be some lasting injuries from a wreck like this that go essentially unnoticed at the beginning.

Like everybody else has said,,,,I'm glad y'all are all ok! Whew!

Looks like the RTT is gone, will your car insurance cover the cost of it? Just curious.

Nobody's mentioned it yet, but after you found out everybody was ok, and your son had no concussion, I would have gone to the nearest casino and put $100 on red!:sombrero:

Vaya con dios!

First very happy that everyone survived. I really enjoyed your trip report. I used to spend my summers in Pagosa Springs at my grandma's house. I enjoy getting back to the area nearly every summer.

Thanks for sharing the pics and all the good and bad details of your trip. We camped in that same exact campsite near Moab a month before you on a trip very similar yours. We were in a Jeep Cherokee with a military trailer/rooftent at the time.

I saw your rollover thread on MUD a few months ago, right after I purchased a LX450 kitted out almost identical to the one you rolled. After reading your story I'm leaning towards selling my beloved roof tent (replaced with a Turbo Tent and cots, the RTT was getting too small for the three of us anyways). 80 series have a pretty high COG to begin with, and add a RTT, suspension lift, and swing out tire carrier and it gets even higher. Quite a few rollover pics of 80's on MUD, and not all of them from off-roading either. I'll never buy retreads for an 80 series either.

I once had a tire blowup doing close to 80 mph in a Volvo 240. Because of the low COG of the car, and the fact that I didn't let off the gas at all initially, it really wasn't that big of a deal. I maintained full control of the car and gradually worked my way over to the shoulder. Someone on that MUD thread posted a link to an RV site that explains what to do in case tire blowout, which is really counterintuitive. http://www.smallrvlife.com/handling-tire-blowout . What you want to do is accelerate briefly to create forward momentum to counteract the sideways momentum of the blowout.
