That's a great site, Thanks for the tip, I am leaning away from a hammock as I need to have room left under for my dog and gear. But I am now re thinking ever sleeping in a tent again. I am thinking that I will make the "hanging cot", with the ability to be use out fo the jeep as well.

After seeing everyone else's Rigs on here and being throughly jealous I figure it's my turn to through my hat in the ring and see what I can come up with.

Just an idea.

If you are looking for an easy mount to the rollbars, you can use an appropriate sized exhaust hanger, or small trailer axle u-bolt, but use tow plates with extra nuts so the "U" portion sticks out a little. I did this on an old wrangler I had. All the mounting hardware was hid under the roll bar padding and I only needed two small holes for the u-bolt to protrude so "U" could use a carabiner to attach things. It was very sturdy and the trailer axle u-bolts I used had some type of goldish zinc type plating that looked really professional when done.

I used it for stringing clothes lines and hanging backpacks, but it would easily work in your situation.

Just a non-welding Idea for a quick connect mount.

That's a good call on the exhaust hangers. I was thinking of using just webbing loops, although I was worried how strong I could make them. I like the idea of something that is hidden away under the padding.

It looks like this project is going on hold till after labour day as I need my gf's sewing machine which is currently accross the country. I'll update as soon as I start.

Go to a climbing shop and get 1" tubular webbing, I think it's rated to 5000lbs.

That's what I have, Does anyone have ideas on how to attach each end to make a loop. minus the obvious of a knot. I have experimented with different cams. Just not sure how much weight they can hold.

Thoughts?

Yeah I was thinking this just sounds like a port-a-ledge inside your truck...

Honestly? Why not just use a roll a cot??? ZYou can still store things underneath it, it's far easier to sit something on the floor of your rig then it is to suspend something from it;s ceiling. Just my .02 but if you do go through with it more power to you and I'll be eagerly watching what you come up with.

Cheers

I have looked at alot of different ways of sleeping in the truck.

Remember that this is a Short wheel base Jeep. The only way I can have even close to a decent length is to use the whole interior. Really the only way to maximize the interior is to either take out the passenger seat (not an option). Or sleep with half your body out the back.

The other big reason for working on this type of solution is the "packablity" of it. I am hoping to design it to fold and roll up. That way I can maximize the little space I have.

This i am sure will be a work in progress. I had a look at the rock climbing perches, they are pretty expensive, as well as not being the right size to fit between the roll bars. I am going to try and maximize.

Does anyone have any sources for nylon/canvas material? I am trying to find just the material used in camp chairs/cots/climbing perches?

Search "water knot". In webbing, it makes a nice small knot. Adjust so there are almost no tails. The way the webbing leaves the knot in each direction makes it almost like a contiuous loop. Girth hitch the loop to the rollbar and you are all set. If you are totally against a knot, you can sew the ends together, and form a chicken loop.

I have seen it done with a hammock, corner to corner. I'd have to dig around to find the thread. I think it was on JU a while back.

You could always try something like this...http://med-dept.com/litters.php I slept in one for several months while staying in the back of an ambulance while deployed. They aren't the most uncomfortable thing and they would be easy to suspend. The ones we had didn't really fold down that compact, but I did see there were some that collapsed and then folded in half. I'm sure you could find them on ebay or look at some gov't surplus sites.

That is exactly what I am using as a design. only wider with collapsable poles.
