Ahhhhhhhh I see ;) this is in a SWB Jeep... That makes sence, I'm fortunate enough with my 1st Gen 4Runner to have more then enough room to sleep in the back. In your case, along the lines of what you were thinking, I'd suggest you just hang it with some "rafting straps" or more commonly called cam-lok straps. They'll hold more then enough weight to hold you up even if you're a restless sleeper. Remember there will be 4 of them so each strap only carries 1/4 of your weight.

Go here: http://www.nrsweb.com/shop/product.asp?pfid=1440&deptid=1188p:// (you can get these nearly anywhere but I like NRS cause they're good people and they have nice organized straps with length markings and good cam-loks) and look at maybe some 3 or 4 footers(maybe even the 2" wide ones for more load capacity, i don't know how big a guy you are so... Those should give you enough room to asdjust plus once you're in bed you can fine tune the angle/pitch of the rig so you have a flat sleeping platform even if youre jeep is not on level ground.

Personaly I thnk that maybe making a set-up where you hang half out of the jeep (someone else here was doing something simmilar on their TJ) would give you more room and be easier to stow, but if you want to sleep completely in your jeep I'd push the seet all the way forward and flip it up to give yourself a single man berth down the passenger side of your rig. I think a litter would be great, but a Port-a-ledge is really the best as it was litteraly made for what you're talking about.

Did any of that make sence??? Like I said I'm interested in what you come up with because I think this sounds like a nerat idea and I love clever things like this.

Cheers

Dave

Wow that's a great image! where did you find that? I have being tossing around a few ideas and I have found a place to buy the material i need. I like the idea of using cam straps that was my initial plan. I am now trying to come up with a design that doesn't need any poles. I need to find a sewing machine to start this project.

Keep the comments coming,

OK so as always life gets in the way of all my great plans.

But I have made some progress, on the cot. The real reason that it is taking so long now is that I keep getting distracted with other things.

Here's a few of the destractions so far.

CB mounted in the centre console.

Storage plateform

Pioneer Avic-N1 with in dash GPS and XM radio

I'll hopefully have some pics for you all shortly.

Ok finally I have finished the proto type of this thing. It has being a long time coming and 2 sewing machines later. I have produced something that is actually working. It has gone through a few different designs, and different supporting sytems. I am sure the design will continue to evolve as I use it, but for now here is the finished product.

First the materials used are as follows,

heavy duty nylon cloth
2x aluminum poles
6 carabiners
12 webbing rings
I have also used rock climbing repelling rings but these are not really nessessary.

I have now slept in this a totall of 5 nights, not in a row. 2 of which were to test it. 3 on a road trip. Although it doesn't look like it there is considerable head room. the cloth does give quite a bit with my weight and I am able to sit hunched over on it.

Enough talk, on to the pics.

I love this ^^^^

I thought about doing it as well as I love sleeping in my LJ but I hate having to move all my gear around.

Just a question, how hard is it to get out of in the middle of the night if you have to go?

I was waiting to see how long it would take someone to ask me that.

It all depends on the situation. It is very easy step in from the back and slide up the cot, using the roll bars and support rods to pull yourself in. The issue in doing it this way comes from trying to figure out how to close the hard top and tailgate.

It is possible to climb over the rails from the inside. This is a bit of an act thou. I need to first roll down the drivers side window and stick my feet out, then slip over the support rods. I can then reach back down and roll the window back up.

This will all be resolved when I have the soft top on as I will be able to zip the rear door back up, just like a tent.

The other thing I am working on is a way to drape the jeep in mosquito netting, so that I am able to sleep in the summer with no top on under the stars. Then there would be no issues with climbing in and out.

Great job. I love to see a plan come together.

Have you considered using a velcro slit for access and egress, I know some of the more popular hammocks that hikers use have this feature. Just a thought.

Keep up the great work.

This is the stuff that makes this forum one of the best. Simple, innovative, practical, and new ideas.

Good job!

hey man, awesome job on this...gives me even more ideas haha!

If you want to take a look in person drop me a pm. I am in Edmonton and work all over the north of the province.

Thanks for all the thoughts guys. Keep the comments comming. If anyone has any thought or has tryied to rig up a framework to hang mosquito netting from in a jeep? I am thinking for summer camping it would be cool if I could work out something using old tent poles.
