Ambulance Camper/ Expedition Rig Conversion FAQ

Man, I really need to do a better job of keeping up with the threads I've been posting in.

No, no air locker. I have yet to hear of one that didnt end up with long term issues. Leaks are a problem. Sooner or later. Mechanical selectable lockers always seem to have adjustment problems. E-lockers, well I'm just not all that fond of having wires running down to the diff. My goal is as much mechanical simplicity as possible, so standard mechanical Detroit Lockers all around. Short of a spool that's about as simple and reliable as it gets. On road they aren't for the faint heart or uninitiated, but I've run them on road for years in all kinds of weather so I know their quirks. Dont forget its in there, drive accordingly, and all will be (mostly) well.

Hypermax makes a kit especially for the idi vans and if you pick up the recommended basic accessories it'll set you back a bit north of $3K. A fairly large pill but as far as major engine mods go not all that bad. I paid $1,200 just for the tuner for my 6.4 P-stroke and it was about 6 oz of plastic. Supposedly good for (up to) a 50% HP boost over stock, which would be what, about 90 HP putting the idi at about 270? Of course those increase claims you can take with a grain of salt, but I'd hope for at least half of the claim. Nothing I've seen in stone though. If I could find 50 hp and about 100 ft lb I might be able to crack a smile over it.

Might pick your brain on the steering box. Mine has a bit of slop in it as well. Nothing major, but just enough to get my attention. It would be nice to tighten the steering up solid. Ball joints and all that crap is brand new. The only mechanical thing left in the steering is the box.

********** finally got my van back today from the gear guy. More than just a bit annoyed with that whole process. I understand being busy, I run a business as well, but one thing I never ever do is tell a customer to send his work and leave him with the impression I'll get right on it and then leave it sit. Or work on it as a fill in job or something. Guy had my van almost 3 weeks. I don't think he'll get it back to do the front unless my second source gives me something way out in left field tomorrow. That guy told me he was way busy and I told him thats fine, I get it, just give me a date when you can get to it and then when I bring it in.....get to it. If you cant get to it, dont tell me to bring it in. Simple.

Anyway. The 4.88s I think are going to do the trick. If I were going to leave it as is I could probably stand to go a bit deeper, like 5.13, but I figure once I bite the bullet and get a turbo in there I should be golden. At least I hope so. :/

Really good read. Looks like I'm in for the long haul on a big project. Can't wait. Picking up an 01 7.3 Type III in just a few hours. Fkew in to Texas to pick it up. Driving it back to SoCal immediately after purchase, if all goes well, inspection and such.

I'm going to need a lot of help on this one and it looks like ExPo will be a great source.

Plan is to lift 6" and do 4wd conversion. Sourced my first parts already off SMB forum so it looks like another road trip to Vancouver. Should be fun.

Then I'll order most of the lift from Ujoint and see what's what on the interior.

I really like the lower "bobtail" Ambulance departure angke but that might be to big a job for me. I also have a dedicated trail rig so the ambulance is for sleeping and towing, maybe some medium duty off-road as required.

Here's the thing about bobbin the rear. If you crawl under there and look, cutting it doesn't really net you much other than looks, at least on mine. The frame is just about the lowest hanging thing back there. You can trim the body so you get that cool bob-tail look but your departure angle hasn't really changed much. You might save a bit of sheet metal damage but the amount of work required didn't motivate me much based on the amount of clearance gained. A lot easier to pick a better line, take the bypass, or turn around. Worst case I'd rather build some solid rock rails at just below body height to protect what's there.

Anyway take a look. If it's like mine you can't trim much before you end up with the frame being the exposed thing, and to me looking kind of goofy.

One thing, you can dump that rear bumperette thingy. Unless you have mobility issues you don't need it, even with a lift, and it helps departure while improving the look. IMO of course.

Btw, nice looking rig, let see the inside, and welcome to the club. There's the regular van 4wd/camper club here as well, but everybody knows the Ambo 4wd/camper club has the coolest rigs and manliest men in it. ;)

Yeah, I figured those issues might come up. Really I won't wheel it enough or on tougher trails to justify the job it seems. Plus, that's long term.

I'd really like to see a list of common mistakes or proper to do lists for conversion. I have some ideas and experience but this represents my first "RV" conversion.

It all depends on the box. My box is longer than most other rigs in the tail so the angle would be helped quite a bit by a bob. Of course that would mean rebuilding 2 compartment bottoms and 3 doors. Chopping the stupid fenderettes off is a good start though! If you can I'd donate the steel plate covers to your local ambulance corp.

Sharp Looking ambo! Once she's lifted 6" plus taller tires that tail end won't be as much of an issue :-D

Welcome to the Ambo Club badfysh! Most of us are experts (at nothing) so we should be a lot of help. :D

My thoughts on chopping the rear end lean more towards not doing it. Of course it depends on the primary use of the vehicle also.

1. If you're building it primarily for camping, then you are using 4WD just to get from point A to point B, and you will normally take the easiest path with the least resistance. You also need that valuable external storage space you'll lose when to chop it. Lifting it will probably suffice. It's also a lot easier to add a winch to the front end than is it to chop the rear end.

2. If you're building it primarily to transport equipment such as kayaks, rafts, dirt bikes, etc. and need to traverse rough, rocky areas to get to a remote area to participate in your sport, then chopping it in addition to lifting it may give you some benefit.

3. If you're building it for rock hopping, then perhaps you should rethink your choice of platform for your project. :agree:

If you do consider a rail type guard system and / or chopping it, I would take a look at the AmboVan Restarted thread. Tony did an excellent job on his, but it was a lot of work.

The F250 on the right is mine. We got together when he came to Pensacola to participate in a Hobie Cat Regatta.

So bummed. Couldn't do the deal. Electrical was gutted and too many issues for me to start off with. They did have an 08 that was very clean, but also double $ what I was there for.

I'm leaving empty handed and very disappointed. My search continues.

Just so I'm clear, the prices were a steal. $5k for the 01 and $11k for the 08. I'm just not ready to spend $11k on the base.

I might be over excited. I really want an ambulance. I've been lurking for years and finally ready to jump and can't seem to find the right van.

I'm optimistic. But I'm also now flying home instead of driving home. :(

Sorry to hear that, but at least you were smart enough to recognize the problem it would be, and walk away from it. It's important to make sure you get one that is within the realm of your capabilities to convert.

Don't give up and keep looking, they're out there everywhere! :)

Yeah, that 2008 does look nice. It even has a paint job I could live with just fine. Red, white, and blue!
