Ambulance Camper/ Expedition Rig Conversion FAQ

Is that GPR relay for the 7.3 IDI or 7.3 powerstroke? Is it an Amazon purchase or available through auto parts store? I would love for my Ambo to start right up......

Powerstroke in our case. DieselORings.com lists the same relay for IDIs as well. Great guy to deal with... Can't comment on the application, this PSD is my first diesel.

If your truck starts easier if you've plugged in the block heater for 2+ hours, your glow plugs are likely not working right. Could be the relay, plugs, wiring, or all of the above.

Stock Ford Econoline 5x7 headlights are marginal at best. Crestline Ambulances use driving lights to suplement the basic headlights. These are wired to come on with the high beams. Mine had been removed and driving on dark windy highways was downright scary at times.

A set of rectangular Hella 550 driving lights make all the difference. I just came home on a dark and rainy night... Without them was like having no headlights... Turn them on and visibility was excellent, I highly recommend them. In Canada they cost about $150, and it was money well spent.

This is spot on. It's amazing a rig like these wouldn't come with better lighting, even by means of aftermarket add-ons by the Ambo manufacturer.

A few questions

Hello everyone. Thought I'd introduce myself before asking some questions, here's my introductory thread: http://www.expeditionportal.com/for...nother-ambulance-build)?p=1805769#post1805769

I have two questions for the collective ambulance conversion world:

1) What the heck is that yellow, female plug that's in the engine bay? I have a 1996 E350 with a 7.3L TD.

2) It's a Road Rescue model. I'm looking to delete the rear aircon/heater unit. I don't need it while driving and it's no use to me while setup in basecamp as I don't want to run truck and stink up the joint with diesel fumes. Can I simply cap the ends of the ac lines or do they need to be connected to complete a cycle? Is there anything specific I should look out for?

I deleted mine and just capped the A/C line. Then put a NAPA coolant filter setup on the heater line. Everything works super duper. Was really easy to boot. Just make sure you get the right cap with correct thread pitch for the A/C cap or it will leak.

Odds are the yellow plug is where the block heater for the 7.3 is supposed to plug in. Look at the wall behind the drivers seat, down by the floor. Is there something there that looks kind of like a household light switch? If so, thats for turning the block heater on and off. If you look at the beginning of the Belafonte Reboot thread there are pictures of eveything I mentioned. Might help you out. Looks like we have the same base unit.

There isn't a switch, but there is an empty household box located below the driver seat on the driver's side. There aren't any wires going to or from the box and it was always a mystery to me as what it was for.

I thought the yellow plug might be for a block heater but didn't want to screw around with it until know what it was for sure. I haven't been able to track where it goes as it dives straight into the depths of the motor and disappears.

I remember seeing pictures of the yellow plug at some point when reading through the various ambulance threads but couldn't remember if there was a consensus as what it was for. It never gets cold enough here to worry about a block heater so I'll probably just let it be.

Just to clarify, for the heater line you used a coolant filter to reconnect the lines to complete the cycle, correct?

I traced the two lines from the heat/cool unit back to the motor and there isn't, from what I can find, a valve to cut off the supply. I'll likely take it in to a shop to have them break lines and recharge the system.

Forgive me, as I'm a layman with only a basic understanding of aircon units. Can someone clarify what I'm looking at here? I'm guessing the top and bottom are coolant lines and the middle two are the aircon freon lines, correct? It's an ACC model 07-073, but this looks like it's the same thing: http://www.accclimatecontrol.com/products/42/22007-Series-Heat-Cool-Unit

You are correct!

I have a 1993 Wheeled Coach ambulance, and it had a set of A/C valves on the left (driver's) side, underneath outside of the frame, at the junction of the cab and the patient compartment (module). These valves can be used to isolate the rear unit for repair/replacement etc.

Are you sure you don't have something like this hiding somewhere?

Yup, that's similar. Here's what I have. Strange that I don't have a switch anymore. The empty electrical box is labeled engine block heater switch. I wonder if it was removed over the course of servicing at some point, or simply moved though I don't see signs of another one anywhere. The only thing behind the seat is the Chargtek.

Blam! I was following the wrong lines! Apparently I was tracking the wrong lines as it's the coolant lines run through the passenger side. I do indeed have a cutoff on the driver side.

Side topic, what has everyone done in regards to registration and insurance? For simplicity sake I first registered it as a commercial vehicle and insured it as such as well. My limited research hasn't shown any real positives in having it retitled or insured as an RV. While commercial insurance is relatively cheap, are there any benefits or drawbacks to switching over to RV title and insurance? Washington requires an inspection from State Patrol with a certain number of permanent add-ons to suit RV requirements.

I ask because if there is a sizable advantage to going the RV route I might leave the aircon unit in place to help satisfy a re-title requirement before deleting the unti.
