I have had 2 LNR hitches....The first one i bent backing up.....The second LNR give me for free! Great customer service with free shipping to bat.

I then welded it up here which has fixed the problem so far...

Then i added a grease zerk (make sure to add a backing plate behind it so you don't have to fill the whole tube with grease). This prevents any binding metal to metal

Another thing is maintenance....You must keep these connections clean....Every trip i clean with a de-greaser and then re-grease everything

So far so good...

I think that weld would definitely help as it seems that the first thing that happens during the typical failure scenario is that link twists, which then causes binding and the whole thing goes downhill from there. Preventing the link from twisting in the first place would be key.

I ordered one from Chris over at Sierra4x4trailers back in December, had to be refunded cause apparently the company that makes the Max Coupler are having some sort of quality control issues. According to the manufacturer all orders are on hold until the "problem is resolved". <--- not exactly sure what the 'problem' is, but that was back in December and Ive heard nothing since.
Last I heard they were in the 'testing phase' of the new design.

Post up if you hear anything different, Im still coupler-less!!!

You are correct that they are in the testing phase. We heard today that they expect to complete testing this week and that we should be receiving our back-orders next week

Is there any cause for concern from those who have one of the original Max-C's, or is the issue they are correcting only relevant to the new style?

The original "welded" couplers are perfectly fine. The issue is with the newer "square" style. On some couplers the roll pin is backing out and the coupler starts to loosen up. I have seen at least four cases of this, though in each case the coupler did not completely fail, and did not result in separation of trailer and tow vehicle. Though, if not noticed in time, it could very well happen.

Kilby has been working on this for some time. They are reassuring all of us who sell, and install, their couplers that we will be receiving the parts to retrofit the affected couplers by week's end or early next week. Like Mario said, Kilby has also stated that they will most likely be shipping revised couplers as early as next week.

All we can do is wait, as Kilby is doing everything they can to ensure they have a safe and reliable product. I hope they get it figured out soon, though, as we have 7 trailers waiting for couplers...

Ours was one that just about came separated as well. Happened about 1/3 of the way through our CalZona Expedition trip as we were doing walk around daily inspection. The roll pin started coming out and that was even after we welded the hole shut! That means there's a ton of pressure on that pin. Thank god we had a spare Lock N Roll in camp with us. Talk about lucky, or else our trip would have been Done right then and there. It's been frustrating as we haven't heard much from Kilby Off Road and even less from Chris since he's on some type of indefinite leave. Not exactly thrilled with the situation and hope all works out as Chris has always seemed like a great guy. We're waiting patiently to find out what the fix is. Our solution for now is put a Lock N Roll back on. I don't need to lose a $20k trailer.

I was talking with LNR just a couple days ago and they will be updating their site with the pictures from the new design in a week or so. Personally, I've never had a problem with mine, but I know what when I back up and the trailer is closer than 10 degrees, that I need to put down the front wheel on the trailer to keep it from getting out of alignment. As long as the new design is what I expect, I'll probably go back to them for my new trailer. The new designs have up to 16,000lbs ratings, and I like the additional mounting options that they have. My trailer will be a lard-***** at around 2,500lbs, so I want something strong and something me (and the wife) are used to.

Thanks for the update Gabe. We have one of the original Max-C couplers, so I'm glad to hear we have no cause for concern.

OK looks like the new Max Coupler is back up for sale. Any one got the new unit yet and tried it out?

I'd like to hear some peoples opinions on the new design before I pony up the $$$'s

Thanks
