Another LR3 tire question

Bummmmer.

What do you mean the extra weight? The weight of the material in the extra 1" of wheel? I'm an offroading/overlanding newb...hope to learn it all though!

I think he means there are few suitable tires in the load range that the LR3's fall into b/c they are heavy as all get out. Best bet is to grab a set of 18's if you decide to do any serious wheeling/overlanding; they can be found on eBay for ~$500 if you look for a bit. Keep the 19's for street tires or winter tires potentially and use the 18's to give you a much broader selection of tires.

No, read what Ray said. Vehicle weight with all the extra crap on it. Tire needs to be an LT or E load range unless you want more troubles down the "road" .

Maybe I missed it, but how did the tire fail exactly. I was considering the A/T3 for my LR3, but you have me rethinking it.

It seems like most of the 265/65r18 tires are a "P" series. So you guys only recommend using a E rated LT tire?

To the OP, Just out of curiosity do you have any pictures of your LR3 with the Cooper A/T3 tires on?

I initially considered the Cooper A/T3's, designed by the acquired Mickey Thompson team. After consideration of LR4 weight, payload, towing and off-road requirements I made 18" rims and E-rated tires the minimum.

Doh! Yeah that makes much more sense! Anything specific to look for in 18 rims for offloading and towing? (~5700lbs)

In terms of rim selection? I'd go OE unless you spent the cash on compmotive. All the other stuff that is out there that might fit I wouldn't put on the truck unless it was for just aesthetics but I've never spent much time researching those anyway. The OE 18's don't look too bad, there are a couple of flavors out there depending on your tastes.

Not trying to overthink rim selection but LR already designed the OE rims for a LR3/4. Stay with those and you should be good. Non-OE would require research and phone calls.

Personally I think the LR 10-spoke 18" look good on the LR4.

So I wanted to move from 19" to real off-road tire for my LR3. I used eBay and Google to search out used 10 spoke 18" rims. I think I paid between $125 to $160 each rim delivered. There were not perfect, neither were they after I got them off-road the first time. I got a set of used Johnson rods which were basically perfect for $80 (eBay). Last step was new BFG AT/KO2s 265-65/18's. This brings rover up +2.5" for the rods and another +0.75" for the tires.

Mortimer runs great with the larger tires. I definitely feel the difference. This truck is my DD.

Good luck .... I can no longer fit in. 6.0' parking garage without access height and I do not have a roof rack yet. I never saw anyone hit the high limit bar .... Except me!

Oh, I also bought new set of tpms sensors so now I have complete set of 19"s to get rid of to someone who thinks bigger rims are cool ... The mechanics of getting the tire mounted by a different guy whom I purchased from added some complexities.

Yes, used LR3 rims from an SE. By the way, purchased separately from 3 different sources. I was nervous they would not match but they're fine. 2 were remanufactured and looked brand new so if you scout them out you can find them having need repainted/ finished. Folks at work thought I bought new rims.

I did not see need to go further into steel rims. I think my tires were about $1100 as a special order at PepBoys as a friend of a friend worked there. I got free balancing. I want to say base price on tires was $267 and given goodyears were around $200 this was a minor up charge when I needed tires anyway.

First off roading, aired down to 15psi which we felt afterward was too low. Would do 18-20 next time. Was able to remove stick with no issues. I'd have been pretty disappointed to blow a new tire in <250 miles.

I'm not sure if you posted this photo before but seeing your vehicle in basically stock weight and only a 31.5" tire....why the heck did you feel the need to try only 15psi ? !! ?

NO, NOT 18-20!

Your LR doesn't need any lower than 30 psi, 25 maybe if you're feeling goofy. You probably know this by now ;) but 15 psi essentially assure you some sort of trouble that day.

I was doing some light wheeling / mostly dirt and gravel with a few ledges and rocks. The tire failed on the tread area surprisingly. When the tire shop patched it and added air the tread "ballooned" way out ( like a zit)! Too bad as I really liked the tires' all around drive-ability. If the size I wanted ( 265 65 18) came in a E rated I would have purchased them again. I do think a loaded LR3 with ARB bumper, roof rack Refrig and all our camping stuff is just too heavy for a medium duty tire. So I purchased a set of BFG all terrain's today at Costco. Good price and I'm pretty certain I'll like them as I had several sets of the old design on my Disco 2's and they were pretty stout.
