Another LR3 tire question

I'm not sure if you posted this photo before but seeing your vehicle in basically stock weight and only a 31.5" tire....why the heck did you feel the need to try only 15psi ? !! ?

NO, NOT 18-20!

Your LR doesn't need any lower than 30 psi, 25 maybe if you're feeling goofy. You probably know this by now ;) but 15 psi essentially assure you some sort of trouble that day.

I quit airing down at all.

I was doing an off road course, lots of jeeps. Guide suggested that range, I thought it sounded low and at end of day he agreed. Truck did handle better, I could tell the difference. We did half day at stock pressure (I run 35 & 45) which is a couple pounds heavier than spec.

My beast was not going to get stopped by anything in that course!

What do other stock LR3 run?

Gorm: I want to see your cabinets and tracks...!

Well, mine is much heavier than stock so I found that 30 was the bottom end of what made sense because any sport that would put too much force into one small area like a sharp rock, would get right up to the rim lip and risk tire damage. I'd say try 30 on stock weight and find some spots where you get out and see how compressed the tire sidewall gets.

35 is my new low psi. I run 52 on the highway. It usually weighs 7000-8000 lbs. depending on what on top of or inside it and the 150 lbs in extra fuel tank when full. However this is why I removed the 3rd row seats and 2nd row center and 2nd row starboard. 3rd row are roughly 80 lbs.

Here's a 275/65-18 at 25 psi on typical moderate Sierra rocks (Signal Peak trail)

.
Notice that it's nearly compressed to the bead. Although the tire was undamaged, it gives an idea of why we can't run really low pressures like 'normal' tire sizes do. These low profile tires just don't work that way.

Granted, my truck isn't stock and weighs in around 7500 lbs loaded. But even on a stock truck I'd probably use 25 as a good starting point for trail work. On dirt trails I'll run more like 35. On the highway I'm 50/52 f/r. I've tried running lower pressures and have never cut a tire or lost a bead but pics like that make me think it's been more luck than anything that's kept my tires alive at 20 psi. About the only place I will go that low now is in the dunes or maybe the snow where maximum floatation is the name of the game and I'm not worried about rocks or other sharp pokey bits.

Factory 08 LR3 18" and OEM Size Nitto Terra Grappler

I currently use factory 08 LR3 18" and OEM Size Nitto Terra Grappler. Run no less than 30psi regardless of weight just because of the lower profile. I have had zero problems and love the tire. Amazon Prime ships free here in Hawaii too. Ordered and at my door in 3 days..............there is my plug. LOL!

You're going to have to show some photos of nice Hawaiian trails !

I aired down to 30psi on my 16" Disco 2 31.5's and it worked very well in Moab. It made a huge difference in traction vs. 35psi.

25 would have been better, but we were on Elephant Hill in canyonlands and I didn't want to drive out on the highway at 25psi for a long time. I can't fathom an LR3-4/FFRR under 20psi on a low-profile rim. Wow, you are lucky!

On the flip-side, the first time I took my old ZJ Grand Cherokee to Moab I was pushing 45psi (don't ask). The Jeep actually did ok, but I think all of us had permanent back damage from all the bouncing around!

@Jwestpro. I'll try and get some videos and pics up. It's very limited here and nobody seems to off-road their Rovers just Jeeps but they let me hang so I can pull them out. Lol
