Another Tacoma Build (Brian's 2015 DCLB)

It's too bad you are not having a good experience with Deaver. I had an issue with my new springs, and took care of it with one phone call.

Maybe they are busy/closed due to the holidays?

No clue. Their website/Facebook says nothing about holiday hours. They have no voicemail setup. You call and it rings and rings and rings. Sometimes I did this 3 times in one day and someone finally answered. It is very frustrating though and makes me want to take my money elsewhere. BUT most people really like the product so I guess I'll try a bit more.....

Brian,
You may try Oregon spring they usually build the deaver pack for them to deaver specs anyhow. I kinda wonder at what point do people consider a tacoma overloaded? You don't want more spring then frame or axle because the weakest link will bend:) I'm sure you are aware of that though.

Enjoying watching your Taco build Brian. Very clean workmanship.
Congrats on the dueling VW's. Going with Carbonio/APR or AWE Tuning intake? Downpipe?

Thanks. Honestly I've thought about it, as our second kid is right around the corner. I would like to build a van, but I'm not sure I could get away with parking it outside with our HOA. A big ford van with 6" lift and pop-up wouldn't fit in the garage.
You mean something like this wouldn't fit in your garage? ;)

Oregon auto spring builds packs for them, you're right. Deaver comes up with the specs. Again if deaver doesn't come through, I'm going to talk to them directly. This might be better anyway. They can measure and weigh and tweak if needed.

My timbrens have compressed a little bit from the constant load. And I am limited my compression travel by an inch or more with them. So at this point I would say it is over sprung. As the timbrens have squished down and seem to be firmer when cold (could be my imagination), the ride has become a little more rough and less enjoyable. My hope is that I can get a good spring pack designed that will carry the weight well and still be reasonably flexible. There is absolutely a balance that I'm still trying to achieve. But the current setup was intended to be a compromise (between unloaded and loaded), and I'm hoping I can improve the ride now since I plan to leave the camper on.

The van would fit without the roof rack! Actually accord to some others, a quigley conversion on 285s with sportsmobile penthouse would probably barely squeak in the garage. I have an 8' door, and one side of the garage is a tandem so length isn't an issue. I'm just not sure I'd be happy with the ride and less wheel travel of a quigley or lower riding setup, but obviously I'm never quite satisfied. Lol. Don't be surprised if you see a message from me at some point asking to check out your rig!

I just don't know about the HOA. Sigh. Nobody has complained when my truck and camper stay out for days in the driveway. Lots of people have huge lifted trucks, and a couple commercial vehicles. But the CCRs say no RVs or similar vehicles. There is no definition of "RV" in the documents so IF someone complained I guess it would be open to interpretation. It would be registered as just a van, no bathroom, and I could leave out a stove and argue that it isn't a motorhome, but who knows. It's just a thought for now. The truck and camper work great, but when I planned it all out, only 1 kid was in the picture and I'm envisioning something different.

The new GLI has a stage 1 apr tune now. Carbonio intake and apr down pipe are on order, then flashing to stage 2 91 octane tune that should make 271hp/297tq. I have a few other things on order for it too.

Off topic from Tacoma's;
Well you definitely don't want a Quigley--a bit scary(and they modify factory Ford parts to fit their bits, vs making their bits fit with factory Ford parts--<screwy>). QuadVan down on Front Ave. does 4x4 conversions using radius arms. Ujoint Offroad in NC(which is what I have) does a true leaf sprung F350 4x4 SAS--amazing ride/handling for a big van. I'd actually like to take a ride in your Tacoma with the ICON's to get a feel of it(a Taco like yours is on my someday list), and I'd love your feedback on how the big van feels. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with the work UJOR has engineered for these. PM me when you're free, I'm not too far from you.

I doubt the HOA would say anything about a clean 4x4 van. It's certainly no motorhome.

Carbonio intake keeps the intake noise to a minimum which I find a plus. I assume Futrell is doing the APR flashing. APR is solid.

Hah, with the camper on you won't get a good feel for the icons anyway in my opinion. The best the truck felt was without the camper (duh) and with the OME springs without the extra leaf. Really it was amazingly smooth on rough washboard roads and stuff with the icons, no harsh bottom out or anything, it felt really nice. It does work well with the camper too but as the timbrens squish down more, the bigger bumps are a little harsh out back, not enough compression travel at the moment.

If I get any free time soon I'll try to get ahold of you. I'm only home 13 days a month, with my young daughter, trying to get ready for another baby. Lots of unfinished projects right now unfortunately.

Futrell is doing the work on the VW. He has serviced the TDI and we've always been happy. The first thing I did is remove the stupid fake engine sound maker (soundaktor). So embarrassing that they use these. The noise didn't even sync up with the tach during shifts. Good to know the intake is fairly quiet, that's also why I'm using a downpipe with a cat and the factory catback. The wife will drive this car more than me, so I'm trying to make sure it stays comfortable enough for her, and fun enough for me. ;)

Ok, still worth a ride in each. When you're available, I'll make time, I understand your constraints.

Good to hear Dean has been taking care of them/you. Make sure that APR downpipe has at least a 200cell HJS(Germany) metal cat to keep the CEL off. Ze German's are good with most things, VW soundaktor isn't one of them ;)

After all that time and phone calls and emails, the spring guy at Deaver tells me he can't really build a 10 leaf deaver pack to carry the weight. How frustrating. I guess I'll check with alcan. Otherwise maybe drive it to a spring shop and see what they can come up with. This is what happens when you're really picky about something. Haha

I can always put the overload back in the OME pack, but I'm not happy with the lack of isolation pads because it so noisy. I don't really want to ride on an overload either. Another off the shelf option could be an allpro expo spring pack with airbag and cradle, but I've been trying to avoid air bags since the bags for the Tacoma don't contain bump stops. Probably not as critical as I make it out to be anyway.

Brian, what about talking to Atlas? UJOR uses them exclusively and we've all been super happy with them; http://atlassuspension.com/

I may call them tomorrow.

I did talk to both Deaver and Alcan today. For some reason when I tell any of these guys that I want to carry xxxx amount of weight on the rear axle, at a certain height above stock, they seem dumbfounded. Seems like the simplest thing to do and verify. But they all wanted to start with the stock springs as a base line, and add capacity, which makes it more difficult for me to come up with a solid number. Alcan said that most guys with a Tacoma and camper ask for 1000lbs of additional capacity. A fully loaded FWC with appliances, water, gear, tie down brackets, batteries etc is well over 1000lbs, but if you're talking "extra" capacity it might be fine, kind of hard to know.

After the phone conversations I've had, it makes me think even more that I should find someone local who will let me drop off the truck and camper. I emailed Oregon auto spring over the weekend but no response, I'll have to call them tomorrow and see if they can do that. Everything else is going to be an educated guess, and I'm picky (clearly). I just want to load everything in it, drop it off and tell them how high I want it to ride, with a nice progressive pack. Shouldn't be too hard to do, but guessing numbers of the phone doesn't make me feel good.
