Fuji doesn't look too pleased...

Inside it is steaming hot. Fuji is getting groomed, washed and dried all that for a mere 15 USD and you won't have to leave you house.

Haha.. Frank. Nope, she´s a bit people shy...

more from last week:

Now that the gearbox it out I can see that the support is dry and is sporting cracks so I get a new original one for 60 USD.

The fenders are like a calling card of our Land Cruiser, so rightfully Esteban is spending some time and dedication on those.

Trying out how the fender is sitting.

A thick orange protective layer of paint is awaiting its rubbery spay protection. We are trying different stuffs to see how it holds.

Karin-Marijke encounters some bad wires. I can get my mobile soldering tool kit once more and get to work.

Maybe this is why some of the meters never worked. Pretty bad connections.

This is how my mobile soldering set up looks like. The little gas burner has different heads. Pretty nifty and I am glad we bought that thing back in Argentina. It has proved its worth several times now. The torch head produces remarkable heat that helped me get those conical washers out of the front hubs.

This is never going to work. Good thing I am replacing them now.

Nice updates as ever! Going to look so smart when done. Are they going to use lead to do the filler work? Far less likely to crack if they do, can imagine some of that panels will be under a lot of stress with were you go!

Fantastic work Coen. Your Toyota is a chariot worth all the effort you are putting into it (and money!).

Question about the spare tank - since your LC is diesel, and presumably the Suzuki was gasoline powered, is there a problem using the former gasoline tank with diesel? Does the original Toyota tank use a fuel pump in the tank, or just the injector pump?

Keep the updates coming.:sombrero:

@Anton2k3: I have never heard of lead used as a filler. I will ask the guys if they have heard from it but I doubt it.

@Jim K in PA: I had emptied the tank and poured in some diesel to see if there was some sort of protective layer inside that would let go if reacted with diesel, but non of the likes. So I guess it will be okay. I have answered your question also with an image. My original tank doesn´t come with a pump. The injector pump sucks it all out off the tank. Nice, yet another thing that could fail we don´t have to worry about. :)

Today when I fixed the tub to the frame with the bolts that go trough these cushions, I did see s huge difference in hight between the different cushions, but Esteban assured me that everthing would be ok once all the bolts had been torqued. But when I came from under the cruiser, I saw two big dents in the board just uder where the doors should be. All bent. We haven´t a clue yet as to what has happenend. But I quickly undid all the nuts and we are going to mount the sidewall first and see what had happened later.

The new spare fuel tank. I emptied it and poured some diesel in it as to see the walls would be lined with a thin protective layer. It seems not the case. I stripped the pump and hope I get the floater working with a universal fuel gauge.

Because the pump with its filter were reaching the bottom and are gone now we had to extend the tube. Luckily a lot of extra return line are not used, so I cut one of the tubes for this purpose. Esteban is soldering with copper.

It looks like the weld is made from gold.

This is the transistor [or is it called a potentiometer] that is part of the floater. This gives the resistance back to the fuel gauge that would be installed in the dash and for you to read how much fuel there is left in the tank.

I am having a look inside the waterseparator [because I am curious what is inside]. No filter what soever, just an empty bowl with a floater inside. But I discover an awful lot of rubbish on the bottom. So it's a good thing I looked inside.

In general you always have to be careful with your stuff, but here in Bolivia it seems that people are being careful about a lot of things as seen here, many cars have their logo's or brand names riveted to their cars.

After a month our new radiator panel just came from the factory. They produce mainly for the mining industry that is situated in this region. I've got the phone number from the big chief in case I want to visit the factory for a tour one day.

Karin-Marijke found a good upholsterer and went with him to visit various leather shops to see what the market had in terms of quality and color. She bought a nice beige that matches the car color and I am hoping to make the seats duo colored with a darker mocca color so that would really make the seats distinct.

What would be good replacement for the insulation / silencer stuff that originally sits attached to the hood of the car. If I can´t find the original stuff, what would I be looking for instead?

Hi Coen,
I would look for a "closed cell" foam material with a foil backing on it to reflect the heat. A closed cell foam will not absorb moisture. Of course, there are lots of places to look here, but I do not know the situation where you are for such a material. You might try a place that sells house building and repair materials ?

Hope this helps.

Hi again Coen,

Unless I am mistaken, the "lift pump" moves the fuel to the injection pump. That's how it works on my diesel. I hope you have a spare lift pump in your kit, just in case...

My original tank doesn´t come with a pump. The injector pump sucks it all out off the tank. Nice, yet another thing that could fail we don´t have to worry about. :)

I did the same thing, when converting from gasoline engine to diesel. By the way, it should be possible to read the resistance of the float from empty to full, to have an idea of what Ohm range is needed for the gauge. 0 to 90 Ohms is a common one, if I recall correctly.

The new spare fuel tank. I emptied it and poured some diesel in it as to see the walls would be lined with a thin protective layer. It seems not the case. I stripped the pump and hope I get the floater working with a universal fuel gauge.

You are right, it is a potentiometer. Hopefully, you can find a universal fuel gauge with the same resistance range.

This is the transistor [or is it called a potentiometer] that is part of the floater. This gives the resistance back to the fuel gauge that would be installed in the dash and for you to read how much fuel there is left in the tank.

I am glad you checked that. With a diesel engine it is important to have the fuel as clean as possible. Even adding extra filters/separators to the system is a good idea. I learned that the second filter/separator (on the firewall) for our Land Rover is the same as the one used for the VW diesel cars. We have a much larger one located close to the fuel tank, also.

I am having a look inside the waterseparator [because I am curious what is inside]. No filter what soever, just an empty bowl with a floater inside. But I discover an awful lot of rubbish on the bottom. So it's a good thing I looked inside.

Wow ! That should be sturdy and efficient :)

But what kind of stuff would I be looking for. I mean where is it used. If I walk into a house building store and ask for closed cell foam, they will probably look at me with a funny face. Here the shop attendents don´t have had very good schooling and if you don´t have a sample of what you are looking for, you will have a hard time finding things... So in what applience it it used the thing you are recommending?

Hi Coen,
Sorry ! I knew it would be a challenge. There are sometimes rolls of insulation material that have foil on one side and an adhesive backing on the other side. The foam should not have holes in it that allow water to get inside. It is insulation used for various applications in home repair where there is heat and moisture. It's a bit easier to find it here for autos - maybe there is a shop near you that has it for autos to line the floor and footwell and, of course, the engine compartment. I think it should be available there... The home supply store was an alternative, if an auto supply shop should not have it.
