Any Fuso's FG using Continental MPT81's on 20" wheels

I am planning an FG conversion to single rear wheel. Has anyone moved to the 20" wheels to accommodate a Continental 275/80 R 20 MPT 81? It appear that these can air down better than the 19.5 tires available. If this is an incorrect assumption, please advise.

gday,
i actually looked at the possibility of using these on ourmotorhomes just the other day, but conti doesnt import the mpt81 to Aus, so it would mean having them specially imported. but you are right, in theory they should be significantly better offroad than 19.5s.
im actually wanting to build a new truck this year, which i aim to run 335/80R20 XZLs, so if it works it will definetly be getting posted up here.

20 " mpt 81's ??

hello all

oh yeah, we looked into runnning the mpt 81's. we had these on our unimog and loved them. they also readily available thru "expedition imports" here in calif.

our problem was the 335's run about 40 inchs high, and this would take some real mod's to make fit as well changing the gearing to much for the fuso to handle (my humble opinion)
the smaller mpt 81 sizes didn't have the load rating we needed, it is quite a rating drop between sizes.

we run the yokohama ty 303 now, at the time of our build we could not find the toyo m608z in the 285/70 19.5 but now we've found them available here in the states. only problem is the darn yokohama's still have more than half treat after more than 40k miles. can't justify new tires till i get alittle more wear on them.

the toyo's and yokohama's have almost exact rating (6610lbs cold h rating)

we have found we can air our tires down to 40 psi fornt and 50 rear, we've been very happy but still a bit rough on washboard. normal road pressure is 95 front and 105 rear, keep in mind we use our truck dual purpose and i haul goods for our store when not traveling with our camper mounted and needed a better load capacity per tire without having duallys on the rear.

cheers lehel and laura

p.s. if you do happen to go with 19.5, just have them add a beadlock ring to the inside of the wheel if you plan to do much offroad driving aired down.

yeah i agree the 335s will definetly be a challenge to fit. :D
looking at the specs, the 275 has load/speed index of 134K, 4240kg @110km/h. i would have thought this to be enough for the fg's 4300kg rear axle.

hello andrew

i will have to look up those ratings again, or better yet find a tire to look at. my long time unrefreshed memory remembers a rating for the mpt 81's 275 to be about half that.

seeing that, i thought i had better check my research to see if id made a mistake.
i found this

http://www.conti-online.com/generat...ukte/download/technischer_ratgeber_pdf_en.pdf

its continental's tech data book (116 pages..gulp). i think it was page 55, has the load/speed of the MPT tyres. lists 275/80R20 MPT81 at 134K 2120kg (per tyre) at 80-odd psi.
so it is a bit on the light side for a fully loaded FG, but should be ok for most seeking better offroad performance.

drifting back to 19.5's

Andrew, Lehel,
Thanks for the feedback and guidance. The 275/80 MPT81s are just at max load for the FG rear axle (I generally like to over engineer, especially when I am changing the design specs...in this case 'super singles'). As I have been evaluating options, I have come to the conclusion that tire availability is also going to play a role. It looks like the 19.5's are more readily available and Rickson and Stockton wheel both reference these wheels in there dual conversions. I also need to keep the total increase in height under 15% to avoid the need to re-gear. Factory tires are 32" so my preference will be for tires in the 35-37" range

the toyo's and yokohamas run both right about 35" tall and will just fit on a late model fuso (ours is an 08) with no rubbing problems.
we are happy with the gearing with this setup, we haul for our store as well and find the gearing more than adequite. this has also increased our cruising hwy speed to a comfortable 60-65 at 2250 rpm or so. in the stock configuration we could just run 65 mph at redline of 3000 rpm with poor fuel mileage (we found the fuel mileage is affected more by rpm's than load).

fyi, the 275 mtp 81's are only 30" tall so are alittle short too.

Lehel,

Nice looking rig...did you build or buy the camper. Also, when you changed tires, did you add/change suspension?

tnx

hello dave

thanks again. we had our custom camper built to our specs in oklahama by m&m campers. its more of a traditional rv build with wood frame, so we consider this build as a light duty build compared to our previous unimog foam core box. with that came a very reasonable price as well. the box sits atop a working flatbed bed, and the camper comes on and off with ease. we also use our rig to haul goods for our general store.
if i were not using the truck for work, i would do a aluminum frame flatbed specific for the camper to save some weight. with that said we weight in at 13000k total with totally full tanks and motorbike.

thru the dealer we had alittle suspension work done, added to the leaf spring packs which smoothed out the ride considerably and raised the truck about an 1" or so.

cheers lehel and laura

275/80R20 is a 38" tire, not a 30" tire. My brochure shows a 315/55R16 that is about 30" diameter, but nothing in a 275 that is small.

Hi all,

I am quite interested by some feedback about this tire size on this light truck as i am planning to built mine in China :bike_rider: Not too stiff?

I did not find any pics of this 275 80r20 mounted on trucks or light trucks, just so see how it look like, and how high tire wall it has.

I can also opt for a copy of the Michelin 255 100r16, but not sure what size would be the best, any experience ?:)

Thanks

If you can find copies of the Michelin XZL in 255/100R16 size, I think you would have many interested buyers in the USA. Lots of expedition vehicles and Land Rovers can use this size. Let us know!
