hi All,

I know how the tire looks like, but i have only seen it on mogs on 12.5r20 and was wandering how it would look like on 10.5r20. I really don't like the low sidewall tunning touch.

Depending how high is the side wall it can also have a serous impact on the ability to be deflated for soft ground use:smiley_drive:.

Yes there is one brand making the michelin copy i have seen it several time down here, there are also a few other profile that are quite interesting. I will try to get you some pics.
I personally never tried them so i can't tell about the quality but i think they should be fine from what i could see.

I will make an other thread to present my project, and sur ei will have a lot of questions for you guys:ylsmoke:.

I have a good experience in 4wd modification for african trip, but none into truck modification, and the flex frame and suspension modification are by the first problems to overcome.:snorkel:

Hi all

About the chinese copy of the michelin, here it is

http://www.tyre-services.com/Products/YS20.html
http://www.yellowsea-tyre.com/sdp/222262/4/pd-850172/510567-425516/Radial_Tire_YS20.html

they are made by this company:
http://www.honortechtires.com/Aboutus.asp?Title=%C6%F3%D2%B5%BC%F2%BD%E9

I was hunting for something like the XML 325 85r16, but so far did not find. I am sure if a customer comes and ask for 1 or 2 container of this tire, they would make it:smiley_drive:

Anybody body ready to step in, i might be bale to help:sombrero:

I will try to post pics of the ys20 i saw on an iveco in China

i think it should be ok, considering the 19.5" rims are only 1/4" less radius, but the tyres that go on them are about 1.5" less radius. plenty of guys have no problems with the 19.5s, though they have considerably less sidewall than i would have. i would see the 275 MPT81 as quite a good 'comprimise' on these things.
BTW the chinese XZL copy looks interesting, i assume the load/speed are same as michelin?

Yeap, and they also copied the 335 80R20, but not the 365 80R20 as they don't use it on their military trucks.

This 255 100R16 was and is still used on the Iveco Dailly(chinese version) 4x4 and military.

The 335 80R16 is used on the Xiaolong copy of the unimog and few others.

I don't know in what extend they are not pruduced under license as to sell in china, especially to big plants, you need to produce here, and .... a way many company do is to use a local factory to produce with their specs and supervision.

Maybe Michelin followed that way to.

Found this thread looking for some info on a Conti MPT81 and will take this opportunity to correct some errors.

The 275/80R20 is not a 30" tire, some simple math will tell you that its in fact a 37.3" tire that Continental says measures out at almost 38" unladen.

There is a 315/55R16 that equates to a 29.64" tire and Conti says is measures 30.15". This would be a good replacement for an FE, but too small for an FG in my opinion.

The optional Earthromer tire for F550 based trucks (and maybe some others too) is a 335/80R20 which is 41" (math) and 42" (Continental data)

Load indices are 120, 134 and 147 respectively, with load capacities of 1400, 2120 and 3075 kg per tire. (3080. 4664, 6765 in pounds)

Someone mentioned the 275/80R20 fitting on a FG and it surely would with minor lift and suspension mods. Amez (on this board) has a crew cab Fuso on a 38" Michelin tire if I recall correctly. A 35" all terrain tire fits an FG with no lift according to a picture I saved from this board.

In super single configuration, I doubt seriously you would exceed the over 9000 pound rating of those tires on such a small truck. If you did, you may wish to consider a larger platform, as I would not want 9k on the back of an FG on road, much less off.

I have the Continental MPT brochure if anyone wants it and I am told you can order these tires from off road and and agriculture tire suppliers, not from truck tire shops.

Cheers

heres some pics of the 335/80R20 XZLs ive just got in for my new rig. turns out, their actually quite a big tyre for these trucks. 2 pics of next to standard fg, and 1 next to the 11.00R16s on my current truck.

Why did you decide to go bigger than the 11R16's?

Are you planning on any gearing modifications?

thanks for the pics BTW.

Defenderbeam, im going larger than the 11.00s mainly for tyre life and speed reasons, ironically not for any offroad issues. the 11.00 XL on my truck are rated at 100 km/h, and i get around 35,000km from a set (thats completely ragged tho). the 335 XZL is rated for 110 (also the tyre used on dakar trucks that do 150), and should get at least 50-60k out of a set.

im not planning any gearing mods as yet, going to focus on getting more torque out of the engine, i think these 4.9L motors are very de-rated ex factory. if the gearbox breaks ill look at putting an alison in it...

My understanding of tire weight and speed ratings is that they go hand in hand.

So if a tire is rated at 100 kph, that is the max speed rating at the maximum weight rating. If the tire is loaded less than maximum, then a slight speed increase is acceptable. I would imagine that Michelin's are pretty well built tires and even 120-130 kph at moderate weight is not going to destroy the tire.

I have driven Super Swamper Radials at 130 kph/80 mph for quite a while with no damage at all. This was however on a lightweight 4runner/Surf (about 4500 - 5000 pounds/2200kg)

See if you can find inflation tables or a load index and that will tell you what loads and speeds are acceptable at what pressures. What is printed on the tire or in a brochure does not give the whole story.

As an example:

A U-500 has a 395/85R20 tire and Mercedes recommends:
66% of road pressure at 12-35 mph for general off road use
40% of road pressure and no more than 13 mph for soft sand and muck
33% of road pressure and under 6 mph for emergency use and getting unstuck only.

66% on rough, dirt roads really softens the ride and is much easier on the chassis.

and I would still say that is conservative with a safety margin built in, as it comes from the manufacturer.

Andrew, it was a pleasure meeting you and seeing your facility last week.
I'd worry mainly about wheel bearings and secondarily about axle half-shafts with 335s. Particularly if the offset isn't the same as it is with stock singles in front and duals in the rear. And of course the gearing issue. Your alternative that would be smaller and lighter would be the
Chinese 255/100R16 XZL copies.
We will be back about 25 Oct. (my wife and I).

DZLtoy, i have had the tyres up to around 130kph (for a short time), and done some travelling at 105 odd. i realise that they wont blow up as soon as you go over the speed rating, but they seem to start putting out some killer vibrations and start wearing VERY fast. i dunno. might be some strange combination of our roads + heat that they dont like. oddly enough they will easily do 100+ on the dirt with no apparent ill-affects, in fact seem very happy doing so. seems the rougher + looser the surface, the happier these things are..

likewise charlie. was very nice to meet you and see your truck. i think the wheel bearings shouldnt be an issue, as offset is the same as all single rear FGs. + the truck wont be ever loaded up to full GVM capacity. the drivetrain however, may be an issue. my gut feeling is that the gearbox or transfer box would probly be the weakest link if anything.
