Any "really" using electric air pumps for OBA?

dieselcruiserhead

16 Years on ExPo. Whoa!!
Was thinking of wiring up an electric pump with a small tank, 2 gallons or so, and using that for OBA instead of a mechanical / belt driven style OBA pump.. Any thoughts/comments on this? I figured if I bought a decent electric pump that would be OK.. I know they are slow but... ?? I also have a stout electrical system, 140 amps, low electric usage other than headlights mostly, and dual batts in parallel.

electric air comp

dch, I myself use an electric air compressor instead of an OBA. I'd rather have a second alternator than an EDC.

I bought my 2-gal compressor from HarborFreight for $49. It consumes only 2.5Amp and delivers 3 CFM at 90psi, more than sufficient to drive my ARB locker. It will loosen one tight wheel lug nut at a time using an impact wrench, recharging after each nut. It inflates my tires faster than any tankless compressor I've seen. Of course it requires a battery-powered inverter.

Your 140A gen/battery + inverter would be able to power a low-amp electric compressor. Heck, my setup powers my 6-gal garage compressor! (of course I have a 5K/10W inverter powered by a 4-battery bank).

I use the viair, big one, to do everything. Same one from the 62! I really dont want the hassle of a belt drive or the possibel side effects of a belt driven compressor taking a crap under load. My Viair goes out no air--a york goes not belts mybe WP damage etc....

I'd venture a guess that there are 3x as many electric pumps in use as there are belt driven (on privately owned OHVs). Mine is one of them....

Shhhhhhh Don't tell Quick air that the $50 Pepboys unit is faster then their $300 unit.

Grimy, that you? Hola from cK5.

I have two of the Checkers (Kragen here) compressors. I'm pretty impressed with them. Carry one in both the Sub & in Patch.
The Sub has York based OBA IP and Patch is due to get the below once I finish the mount design. Then the 'Kragens' will serve as back-up & in sitch's where it's more convenient to take the compressor to the other rig than to bring the other rig to the compressor.
B4 anyone wanks about using that Sube starter motor to run the compressor know that it's part of the experiment. I want to find out what the life expectancy of a intermittant use motor is in a somewhat continuous duty application. I chose a reduction starter on purpose.

Yep its me.
I have a york under the bench but jamming it on a 22re and keeping the A/C is making for a real fight for space. I have used a buddies Quick air and liked it. If this thing for $50 works as well I will be set for a while. My Cruise control dosn't work so I could hard mount in in place of the servo and not loose any space.
I had planned on going CO2 but again space is at a premium so room for a tank and then the Air tools just aint there for me in this little truck. The 20mpg over the 9mpg the K5 got makes up for it though LOL.

I use the cheapo MV-50 as OBA, works real nice, but the thermal overload will kick in after an all day trip and six tires.

Patch being my '84 Xcab yota has exactly the same problems with mounting a York. The EFI trucks actually have more room that my poor carb'd truck as the EFI A/C compressor mounts lower than the carb'd version. Even the smaller York or York clones used on Volvo's would still be an issue. Which is why I started down the road of building that sort-of Oasis clone.
