Anybody Still Using 35mm Film?

The light meter in the camera must be toast. If I can't find my old hand-held meter, I'll have to check into those.

Still using film here... Nikon F3HP and Nikon FG. I've owned several DLSRs (Nikon and Canon) but as stated previously, there is nothing like darkroom time.

I will admit, though, being currently deployed in Iraq, I'm left with no means of acquiring or processing film over here (x-ray machines do a NUMBER on film sent through mail here!), so i have been contemplating the purchase of a nice D90, I've had my eye on them since they first came out!

And yes, the digital age has surpassed 35mm resolution, but still hasn't been able to perfectly mimic silver halides!

I bought a Nikon FM2n and a couple of manual focus Nikkor lenses last summer in an effort to get back into film, but haven't yet gotten around to do more than shoot a test roll of B&W to check the meter and shutter. One of these days I'll get out and start using it. The camera has such a wonderful mechanical feel to it that it's just begging to be used.

No, I don't shoot 35 mm film any more, alas. The siren song of digital is just too tempting. I miss the materials and mechanical precision of old, and look forward to digital camera products that I'm sure are coming in the future.

But, ya know, my photographs aren't as good as they used to be. When I was younger, I took more time. I thought about it a lot harder before clicking the shutter, because it cost real money for each Ektachrome 64 or Kodachrome II slide I took. Even Plus-X Pan bulk loaded into reusable cartridges took cash I didn't have much of. It made for better photographs.

Now that all I'm doing is chasing some electrons around, I shoot much more freely. But with less care, it turns out.

I have to find a way to get back to the approach I used to take to photography with modern gear. Inheriting my brother's DSLR and some nice lenses might be a start. I always shot fully manual, and now I can do that again.

Now that the economy is improving a bit, I have gone back to nearly 100% film as clients are willing to pay for it. I started with digital in 1994, hated it, then liked it, loved it and now kind of dislike it again, it is just not a photographic process to me. I use digital for deadline and heavy shooting workloads, but that is about it anymore.

All this year, I have been either on the road or out of the country shooting some of the last Kodachrome on Earth in Leica and Hasselblad rangefinder cameras......sorry digi-fans, the image *quality* buries digital. I also use black and white films in both 35mm and medium format, hand print it in a darkroom, never touches a computer.

From a business standpoint, this move back to film is working really well....surprisingly well actually.

Now back to packing the truck / camper for weeks on the road...shooting film!

Is the issue not getting good prints from your digi shots? I've found the same problem and had to try a few developer sources to find one I liked.

I find the with my digital cameras I never get the pictures developed-they just get loaded into my macbook and there they stay. I don't know why this is-out of sight thing I guess. I've found that I'm going back to my 35mm SLR lately and thinking about getting a rangefinder.

I shot a roll of Kodak Ektar 100 last time we were in Mojave NP. I plan to shoot film again this weekend at Joshua Tree.

My wife and I just had our first roll of film developed, here is a blog post she wrote about and some examples.

This was my favorite.

I took my Canon AE-1 on a couple trips recently. The light meter wasn't working but the images didn't turn out all that bad.
