First off let me say that calling your Gen 2.5 just a "2.5" is confusing because when a post is made about how your "2.5 won't start" some of us thing "ok 4D56 engine issues". Other things are just the normal knowing what you have will get you the most help, the forum can better assist in trouble shooting if we know what you're equipped with.
So i think we should collectively arrange a list of USDM and Global Montero/Pajero/Shogun/Raider chart for identifying your truck by it's first three to five chassis numbers. It is located on your passenger side bulkhead (firewall) plate in the engine bay, mine is V45W and it is a 1999 Montero with Blister fenders. From there we can get into engines and options using the rest of the codes and vin numbers, anyone else find this useful?

We can then turn that into something like this; 1999 V45W SOHC 3.5 LWB or '99 V45 just as a base easy to ID thing then depending on the topic add what we're discussing like 6G74 SOHC or 3.5 SOHC or whatever it may be. This also helps distinguish the difference with the Montero Sport because there's a big difference between a '99 Montero and a '99 Sport and if someone were to order a Montero lift kit for their Sport they will be greatly inconvenienced when they get a pair of coil springs.

I like your thinking, We should all stick the identifier of our machines in our signatures. Mine would be a V26. I've noticed that the information from the Australian sites seems to only apply to the Australian Pajeros, and the Japanese and UK/Irish ones we get here seem to have different specs, especially the diff ratios. They even had 2nd gens with leaf springs on the back, and they seem to get different engines and transmission combos.

From what I've seen the v26 auto and manual swb up until late 96 had 4.636 axles, after that they got the electronic injector pump, along with bigger brakes and 16" wheels, but only the Japanese models, the european ones remained the same. The diffs went up to 4.9s in some but not all, though after the tiptronic gearbox was brought in they did all get 4.9s. However I've seen a 98 SWB sold in Ireland that had 4.875s, which is a bit of a curveball

From what I've seen v46s remained the same at 4.9 no matter what the transmission. Not really seen enough petrol models to be able to put together my own mental list of diff ratios.

What about simply NA-NS like most if not all the pajero forums? The chassis code stuff is way to complicated especially for a search.

I thought about that BUT then i have to figure out the submodels for each based on vehicles we don't have in the States and some things may not line up as far as parts databases. For example I have a NL GLS equivalent (NL GLS and GLX are very different and it almost cost me $300 once), It's good to know all of this information about your rig and that's why i included the NA-NS info above. Chassis numbers are absolute and are stamped on all of our rigs where the NA-NS designation is not, currently there are a few of us from 4x4wire.com and Vmag trying to re update all the Montero/Pajero info for you guys. I know this stuff is hard to search for but if we start over and do it right from the beginning we won't keep having the same old problems over again. If everyone does their part you will be able to search Montero V45W and get a heap of info specific to that truck and from there you can use the other info above to cross reference cross tech and be informed.

If anyone want's to help "restore" the old tech and info from 4x4wire.com please feel free to do so especially if it's your thread and you have original pictures.

I think there will only be something like 7 or 8 chassis codes for Montero's in the States, so it's not that much to keep track of. I posted all of them for reference and for guys outside the US plus it's good to see where your truck falls within the range incase you feel like taking a gamble on some over seas parts.

You're new to Mitsu's so you likely don't know that a Montero Sport is not a Montero, Mitsubishi North America named it that just to confuse parts people and owners. It's originally called a Challenger but due to the Mitsu Chrysler love affair in the 90's they wouldn't use that name so they called it something else... The Sport (see how i typically leave out the "Montero" part) is a SUV version of the Mitsubishi pickup, State side we got the 3rd generation L200 SUV aka 1st Generation Sport.
The Challenger/MonteroSport/PajeroSport/XStorm has the following Chassis numbers with a new one on the way.
