Anyone Expo a regular cab Toyota 4x4 ??

And Rot Box: I love your old Toyota! It may not be cosmetically nice but it just has this certain "I've been through hell and have the scars to prove it" look an it's working really well.

I did, before Expo'ing was the cool thing to do. I had an '86 short bed regular cab (RN61-L :sombrero:). It went through many build phases and I even had a 4WC like tanglefoot posted on the truck at one point. I bought the truck new in '86 but my problem was that I hadn't stopped growing yet (I was still in high school). As I eventually grew to 6' 5" tall, I found out that a regular cab was no longer comfortable. But, I still kept it for 17 years! It was a great, very maneuverable truck, as anyone who wheels a Toyota will tell you. After a few years the SAS bug bit me and I threw the entire All Pro Off-Road catalog at it, installed AA Trail Tamer 4:1 gears and wheeled it some more all over SoCal, Oregon and Washington. After a few trips I got tired of it and sold it to a nice guy in MT...and bought a motorcycle. At any rate, aside from being short on cab room it was a great truck. I'm really considering getting another truck - either a 1St Gen Tacoma D-Cab or a later 2nd Gen and going from there...after the Sportsmobile is paid off though :wings:

On the SR5 aluminum wheels:

I'm pretty sure that all the Toyota wheels of that style have the exact same dimensions. They were offered on Trucks, T100s, IFS 1st and 2nd-gen 4runners, and FJ80s but they have too much backspacing to fit on 1985 and earlier Trucks and 4runners without spacers.

The 15x6 6-spoke steel wheels on Rotbox's truck (BTW, that's quite a feat to pull 37's onto 15x6s!) came on 1985 and earlier Trucks and 4runners as well as FJ60 and FJ62 Land Cruisers. They do have the correct backspacing to fit on solid axle Trucks and 4runners.

Indhark--mine's not an FWC. It's a Four Seasons (defunct, Colorado company, wooden construction) from 1988.

I love the earlier trucks. I like to look at newer trucks but it would be really tough to get myself to go newer--they just don't have what the earlier ones do.

The Land Cruiser wheels have a different offset. IFS SR5 wheels will not fit an FJ80, but FJ80 wheels will fit on an IFS truck.

I have 3 full extra sets of wheels that I tried on my mini truck. The FJ80 (SR5 style) hit the TRE, the FJ60 chromies fit fine, and I was surprised that the FZJ80 16s hit the TRE, too.

Send me the FJ60 chromies then! I gotta find a different set of wheels. I like these, but not on my truck. I think they look great on other Toyota's.

Where's the OP? This has turned into a 1st gen discussion thread! Maybe we need our own thread-the 4runners have one! What makes them so special? Lol

I'm gonna use them. I have 5 or 6 of them. I'd like to put a skinny 31ish tire on my truck. Maybe a buckshot mudder.

There's a TSL Bias in 32x9.5 that is pretty intriguing. That tire would look great but probably rides horrible and has terrible tread life. When I buy a set of tires for this thing, it'll be the last set for very long time. I'm gonna get a 60 series for a DD one of these days.

Ah...sorry for that! I had an old Grandby that was great...looked very similar to yours. It was a wide thing!

I love the earlier trucks too. I've owned a few others in addition to my '86 (an '84, '93, a few 2WD commuter trucks thrown in the mix...). But the kind of wheeling I do now isn't as extreme as it once was. For what I want to do, a first or second gen Tacoma would probably do nicely. The comfort aspect certainly is improved over the earlier trucks. I loved how the Japanese-built pick-ups and 4Runners maintained the ruggedness and longevity of what the Land Cruisers were known for. The current offerings not so much, but they still offer a nice balance of creature comforts and dependability and I wouldn't hesitate to take a 2014 Tacoma places far beyond the reach of improved roads.

Nice '86, Indhark. Did you have a Grandby in a compact truck? I wouldn't think that would fit. Did you use a bed platform to get it over the fenderwells?

Thanks tanglefoot. Yeah, the PO had it in his '81 shortbed and it was mounted on a home-brew box. Hey, it was free and it worked!

I'm late replying to this thread. I have an '04 standard cab Tacoma 4X4 that has been "expoed". I got the truck 3 years ago with just 11k miles and knew exactly what I wanted to do with it. It has a rear swing gate with the spare tire mount and holders for 2 fuel or water cans from Demello Off Road. They also supplied rock sliders and rear frame reinforcements. The suspension has been replaced with a custom Deaver rear springs and Icon coil overs and shocks giving the truck about a 2 1/2 inch lift over stock.

Its a 4 cylinder with automatic so its somewhat lacking in power when climbing hills on the road. The gas mileage is also disappointing running between 14 and 18mpg on the road. The size is great for off road. Sometimes I run with a Jeep club and I've been able to go anywhere they can go with only an occasional issue due to the height of the rig with the AT Flip Pac camper. It would be nice to have a little more room in the cab but off road its useful to have the 18" shorter wheelbase. I was originally concerned about the departure angle but so far I haven't scraped the rear bumper on anything but dirt.

Nice truck NotAMog! I had an 01 2wd Tacoma similar to yours before my current rig. I wish I had all that power back! Lol

When you start driving older Toyotas, power quickly becomes a relative term! When you hear people gripe that their 350 doesnt have enough "get-up-and-go" you wanna tell them to go hop in a 22r and then come back and have a discussion on power.

Rust does a body good.
I'll have to see if I have some pictures later but I've done plenty of traveling in my 79 mini. Actually did about 3k miles last year with about 80% being off pavement. My bed is bobbed which does present a problem space wise but I'm not sure my tired 20r would appreciate much more weight.
