Anyone Know How to Correct Speedo after Tires/Gearing? 05+ Tacoma

Has anyone on here recalibrated the speedo to correct for tire/gear changes???

I know my speedo reads 60 when my GPS says I'm doing 65... I've heard there is a way to correct it.

This affects your MPG and maintenance/warranty too since the odo is off slightly...

There must be a fix since they put larger tires on sometimes at the dealership!

So, is this what the dealerships are using when they recalibrate?

I'm thinking if they sell a truck with 20's and 35's... they must recalibrate after this modification prior to sale of a new vehicle in order to keep the truck legal or they would have lawsuits up the wazoo...

I'll call my dealership this week... hopefully someone with a brain answers the phone this time...:smilies27

I was told by the service writer at my Toyota dealership that they can only flash the ECU to recalibrate up to one 1 inch over stock tire size. That has been 2 years or so, I don't know if they have anything new & improved by now.

Good thought on the 20's and 35's. Now that those are becoming more popular and available from the dealerships, maybe they do have a way to recalibrate for that size. Or maybe they just send those bling things out the door without recalibrating. That wouldn't surprise me....

Interesting, looking at the wiring diagram for the Combination Meter and the simplified diagram for A/T & M/T in the P0500 Speed Sensor DTC, the input to the speedo for an A/T comes from the speed sensors at the wheels via the ECU whereas the M/T comes from the speed sensor in the transmission direct to the speedo. So, where tire size would cause an error in M/Ts, it would not in A/Ts. Vehicles an with A/T would self calibrate and I don't believe that recalibrator would work for M/Ts.
Unless I'm missing something here:

I'm guessing your's is a manual transmission?

A Tacoma owner with an automatic transmission and GPS could prove this out.

The dealerships must be doing something. I just can't see how they could legally sell a new Tacoma with a lift, 20 inch rims and 35's without addressing this issue...

If you find out the answer to this at your dealership, maybe at the same time you could find out if speedometer correcting devices like the Tru-Speed will void warranties.
