I am having a hard time choosing a hard shell tent, (Autohome Maggiolina Extreme, Columbus, James Baroud, etc.) One of the main factors to this is that many of these tents are not easily accessible for me to see IN PERSON if the size (length) is suited for me being 6'1" tall and 180lbs.

My number one concern for me is I want a small tent but long enough for me to sleep comfortably being 6'1" tall.

So I am reaching out to this community.

Does anyone have a Autohome Maggiolina Extreme RTT in Orange County, California that I can just lay inside for a minute or two to see if it suits my sleeping needs?

I would highly appreciate it!

This is the vehicle I want to mount it to.

Rumour has it that the upcoming issue of Overland Journal features are hard shell tent comparison/review. Should be out shortly.

Yes this is true. They start to mail them out tomorrow actually. I am waiting to receive mine.

You can read all day long about these hard shell tents, but in the end people that are taller and at the size limit of these tents will probably still need to see if they comfortably fit inside one.

This is my issue right now. :(

That is why I need some help from this community. :)

Alu-cab just made news they will have gear sold here also. They make an Aluminum tip up roof tent also. Competition in this product range would be good. Its been mentioned that one nice advantage is being able to put things on the top of the alu-cab top.

You may want to go visit Nomad Ventures in Escondido, they have James Baroud tents in their showroom you can check out.

I don't have an Extreme but have a medium Airlander in San Diego if you want to check it out. Also Autohome is usually at Overland Expo if you want to see one in person. It's only a couple of months away and just need a day pass to see it. You might want to contact Autohome as well. They have contacted customers local to future customers from their sales records and ask them to show it. Can't hurt to ask. PM me if you want to see mine.

Yes the clamshell Alu-cab tents look awesome. I really like how you can put a lot of load on top of the tent. The tent itself weights 172 lbs. + rack would be 252 lbs. Which seems a lot to me? I never put that much weight on the roof of my rig before. I do not want it to top heavy since I off road this thing alot.

Thank you. I reached out to Nomad and they indeed have a James Baroud model in on the showroom floor I can check out. Issue is they are only open M-F. I will try check them out since James Baroud is one of the companies I am considering.

I did the same thing you are about a yr ago. I went to Off the Grid Rental in Lake Forest and they have some you can rent. We rented the air top one not the clam shell.

So the wife and I did it for a weekend. We also used that generation 4runner and it was totally fine. Im 6'1" and more like 210lbs and i had plenty of room.

Both James Baroud and Alu Cab will be on display at this year's Overland Expo West, if you would like a first hand look!

AutoHome will be at OverLand Expo in Flagstaff this year as usual. Stop by and see us!

Also, give Andrew a call and see if we can set you up with a tent to try in SoCal - we've done this before.
