AO roof racks, whos got em?

Ok so I saw the AO rack on the FJ40 in the OJ b4 last and I've seen them before on SleeOfroad. I want to mod one to fit the 4Runner. I have the 3 cross bars and know I can't utilize rain gutters simply because it doesn't have any. I was thinking I can either cut the mount feet off and use couple treaded hook end hardware to attach it to the crossbars. I need some closeups to determine whether I can make one work or not. Length is a concern because I might not be able to support the front. The rear with accommodate my RTT so no rail around the back but for sure around the front. I will need to throw some fuel up there at some point. I know they don't make a rack so I'll either have to build one or buy one and mod it :). But i like the AO type for sure, simple and clean.

You might want to post some pics of the space and supports you have to work with. I'm trying to picture the top of my 4Runner and the space available but I don't have a RTT like you do.

If you figure the roof tent floor is 48"X48" so from end to end is 48". That being said I don't know what an acceptable overhang would be and have it stil remain stable.

Keep the new ARB model in mind... setup with a cage around the front, flat in the rear designed for use with a RTT

I hope folks don't think I'm just pimping goods, I'm seriously just tossing options out there.

Another new option is a rack that Paul @ Equipt may be bringing in shortly, he has one on his 100 Series, it works very nicely with his Ezi-Awn tent.

Not the best shot of his setup, but a fun pic regardless :D

Yeah I don't care what brand it is just as long as it works. I know the 100 series have to hook th their factory rack and not to gutters so that will work in my favor less to adapt. I can always add anther cross bar in the rear door openings I believe they are q towers.

I would like an all AL construction to keep it light. I wish I lived closer to someone who stocked these things so I could see which one might work the best.

Well with a stroke of luck I found a lead on a Hannibal roof rack for a Jeep Grand Cherokee. It measures 79L x 53W x 7H, that puts it just over the sunroof but not over the end of the roof line. Width wise I'm using 58" yakima load bars so it's not wider than the bars (good thing). It has a removable rear bar but the side rails aren't removable. I can run the rack forwards or backwards forwards if no fuel cells are to be used and I want the front porch of the tent over the front of the vehicle and backwards if I want to hold gear or fuel and the tent will open like I have it now off the back. I will have to remove the feet to that I can just straight mount it to my crossbars.

Ohhh I like it! It's very clean. But for what I'm spending I'm pretty sure I'm getting a good deal. I like the fact he installed tracks all the way up to the front of the the vehicle. My tracks run just up to the intersection of the front and rear doors, leaving some hangover. Now the overhang will be ok more or less as long as a substantial amount of weight isn't applied (3 or more jerry cans, etc). I do plan on running it backward to let the roof tent hang off the rear, I haven't played with the notion of the tent opening over the front, hmmm.

Oh boy am I excited. Well I found someone who has a good bit of Hannibal stock. The best option I found was a Hannibal roof rack for a Jeep Cherokee powder coated black, removable rear piece, and shipped w/o the gutters. Making it easier for me to mount it to my cross bars. The measurements are 79"L,53"W I can mount it to the 3 cross members I have currently and if more support is needed in the front I can add Q towers with Q-clips and an extra 38" bar. Need to find some jerry can holders.

im still going custom on my Aaron, designed should be built by the end of janurary or early feb.

Well given what AL cost right now and saying to myself hmmm $450 for a powdercoated AL rack or build my own ..... nope for $450 I can't build my own. The dimesions are great, just over the sunroof and right to the tail light the roof ten already is, over hang like the roof tent +1.5" but not over the load bars. And it's Hannibal so you know the quality is good. Good luck and keep me in th know on how the progress goes

Great link! I'm thinking that a similar plan could be followed for installing the AO half rack on the roof of a Dbl Cab Tacoma (for those of us not running a fiberglass shell).

If the L/c version is to wide which is 82x51, SLEE will be bringing in the PRado version which i believe to be 82 x 48. which might work alittle better on a taco. just my 2$..
