AR-7 Collapsable .22 Rifle

You are probably right to an extent but for something like a .22 bolt action or some other action would actually probably drive me nuts. For that reason the biggest thing I dislike about the papoose is the small amount of ammo that can be stored in the clips versus say a 10/22 and the banana clips. I like the semi auto because it fun. There are some lingering aspects of the apocalypse thread (lol) but seriously that is extremely secondary. I have shot a semi auto .22 with a huge banana clip and really liked it.

Now to find a Papoose. Looks like new they can be found for around $250 which works for me. Again check out the youtube video, it covers it pretty well. Obviously just one guy's opinion but from google searches and from many of your opinions seems like a good one.

If you use anything other than the standard AR-7 magazine (it's not a clip) then you lose the theoretical advantage of having everything store in the stock. Likewise, if you want to have two magazines, you need to keep the spare somewhere else.

The only question that I have about the Papoose is, does it float? The AR-7 will, the 10/22, not so much.

Supposedly the papoose does too at only about 5lbs with scope, 3.25 just the gun (unreal). I wonder if it floats in the open position too for things like a canoe going over.

Hi Andre,

I have a Papoose that I would be willing to sell. It is in pristine condition and I never shoot it. It is scoped. I've never tried it but I'm sure it will float in it's padded case which is also in pristine condition. I don't think there's 100 rounds through this gun. Let me know if you are interested and perhaps we can work something out. I live in Boise and can send you photos tonight. It's a fun gun and rather accurate considering it's form factor.

Andre, there is usually a coupel AR7's at the gun show, I about picked one up last year but ended up with a .22 mimic of the AR15 for $90 :D

Here is luckyrxc's papoose. Pretty psyched and I like that its scoped. It's not the stainless version but that is OK. In typical expo fashion I think we spoke for at least an hour and a half :). We are going to meet up some time in the near future about half way between us. I like how the AR-7 fits in the stock but that is OK. I think it'll be fun to have this little pea shooter if you ask me... I'm psyched... :)

There are compromises that were made so that the AR-7's bbl, action, and mag would fit in the stock. I'm not sure that all of them were good compromises.

I liked the way that the single one that I've ever shot shoots, but I'd rather have a bull-barreled & tuned-up 10/22 or an original Stevens Favorite for a plinker.

I thought a lot about a 10/22 as well and the price on these certainly is right as well, and it sort of fits what I was looking for. I actually wanted a decent hi-cap semi auto .22 (and the 10/22 certainly fits the bill) as these are such fun guns to shoot. It was then I found and started considering the collapsible.

After taking a look at that video again I think I'm making the right decision for the ease of portability and that its a good shooter as well. The biggest weakness to me is probably the lower cap magazines, which I'll just get a couple. The AR-7s are still cheap and honestly it crossed my mind to maybe get one of these as well to just leave in the truck, but then again I can just do that with the papoose.

wy not a pistol

I have the ar7 it works. but kinda big and dont shoot that great.
been looking for the springfeild it is the best one out but heavy .I think
for a lot of reasons my browning buck mark or the ruger they shoot as
well as any of the rifles . if you put them side by side the 2 pistols will
def out shoot the ar7 and probebly as good as the springfeild ( just giving up the 410)

This is my thinking, too. The problem for me is that there are generally no restrictions on transporting and possessing a rifle here in California. Whereas a pistol must be locked, unloaded stored separate from the ammo and put in the trunk.

In contrast again, I usually put my shotgun with a loaded sidesaddle in the back of our car on long trips without a second thought. Never know where the zombies will strike! A papoose I think would fit the bill nicely cuz it can be thrown in a backpack or the back of a car for any purpose without restrictions.

That's just more of a stupid Cali thing though...haha!

Andre I think you made the right choice. The Papoose is far superior as a shooter. An AR-7 is more like a survival tool, don't take it out of the case until/unless you need it, and then it is adequate but no more. The Papoose is a real gun (a takedown version of Marlin's standard .22 semi auto) and should last a long time.

You can probably find higher capacity magazines if you look around. They may not say they're for the Papoose but since the Papoose is the same action as Marlin's other .22 magazine fed rifles, there should be mags available.

I have looked around and there are some crude aftermarket ones but here is a photo comparing the two - the aftermarket is the black on the right. It really is a POS.. So 10 round OEM clips it is. This said again I am psyched and I agree I made the right call. My thoughts again are just leave it in the truck maybe even permanently particularly in my FJ55 when I finally finish it due to its size... :)

This said one thing that is lingering in my mind (and maybe I'll just do this as well :) ), knowing what I learned in the last week I might consider building a Ruger 10/22 with a folding stock (overall length is about the same). Then I get the high cap, could do a scope as well. The only drawback is the folding stock is more of an assault rifle style with a pistol grip. Or well, maybe this is a plus, I dunno. I think it'd a be an even funner plinker. A friend in our Land Cruiser club mentioned he has this setup with a site and it's a blast... but a traditional rifle definitely has pluses as well.
http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/23871-1.html I was thinking this stock, see if I could score a stainless 10/22, and start building. That said I have some other firearms to get to perhaps before I score a second .22.

Thanks guys for all of your input... It definitely stopped me from me from making the mistake of getting that gun... :)
