What size impact wrench is the ticket with this set up ? 3/8" or 1/2" ? I know nothing about air impacts other than the specs forward & reverse in ft lbs.

My friend has one for his FJC that sits on 35" tires. He really likes his. Kinda making me want to ditch the air tank for one.

Following. I just picked one up, coming from a single ARB compressor I used for years without any issues other than it would shut down when it overheated. I too plan on plumbing a tank and running at least an air impact wrench on it.

My plans are this: I already have a Rigid 18v impact gun. It easily removes the lugs (135 ft lbs) on our Power Wagon. It will only tighten them to around 120-130 ft lbs though, which is perfect for me. I will carry my torque wrench when traveling. I also already have a 5 gal aux air tank that i could plumb in if need be. Overheating should not be an issue either as we will always have our generator and/or my inverter set up with us to run this http://www.walmart.com/ip/Massey-High-Velocity-Fan-9/17129010 if it is hot out or I need to run it for extended periods of time. That little sucker moves a LOT of air for it's size.

What would be the ticket for an air impact, 3/8" or 1/2" ? Are HF 1/2" guns any good ?

Thanks

Tooltopia had a nice looking compact 1/2" air impact on sale last week. I deleted their email, but the sale may still be on their website. I think I'd go with a Husky from Home Depot before I'd rely on anything from HF that has moving parts. My air impacts are Craftsman and they have been fine with light use.

I've have one and it's a beast. Have not run it with tools yet but it works great for tires and I use the air gun a lot to dust off all my gear. It also sounds really cool:). Note:serious power draw. Keep your engine running.

I mounted it to my rear storage rack by installing a couple of bolts in the rear of the case. I just use the handle in the front with a strap. Hose reaches all corners of vehicle.

My 270 amp alt should help with the power draw. I just like the fact that it is portable, from one vehicle to another in a jiffy, water resistant carry case & has its own air tank.

Curious why you want another air impact then?

Air power is extremely inefficient (in terms of watts consumed to power a tool), so I leave my impact for the shop compressor.

The ARB twin puts out roughly 1.8 real CFM @ 90 psi, judging by comparison against the Puma (1.34 real CFM @ 90psi). You'll want that 5 gal tank if you want PEAK performance out of an impact gun. Also remember to use high flow fittings.

While you can get away running on the stock tank (I do on my Puma), but your performance won't be much better than the Rigid cordless.

I guess that's just the "one is none & 2 is 1" coming out in me. I like to have options. Always be prepared is my moto. I guess the US Army did that to me. Anyways, we plan to get off the beaten path, & we are both pushing 60. I do not want to be stranded on the side of ANY road or in the middle of BFE. Redundancy is good---up to a point. I have the space & weight is NOT an issue with my truck. I carry an ARB plug kit as well & figure if i have a good compressor, why not have an impact as well.

Where are you getting the "real CFM @ 90 psi" from ? I have been reading 6+.

I don't know if Ridgid sells an 18V charger that will plug into your cigarette lighter, but that's probably a necessity if you plan to use that cordless tool in the boonies. Unless you have an invertor. And a spare battery is probably a good idea. If no 18V-from-12V charger and no invertor, then the cordless tool won't be much good in a pinch. I know that Dewalt and Ryobi (and probably Milwaukee) sell car chargers, and the Ryobi 18V impact is only about $110 with 300 pound feet of torque, so might be an alternative to the Ridgid if you can't get an appropriate charger. The ARB site shows the portable twin at 6.16cfm at 0psi, so that's free air flow. Pretty decent, but 1.8cfm at 90 sounds about right.

I already got 3 chargers. 1 for the garage, 1 for the house & 1 mounted in the d-side toolbox in the ARE cap. It plugs into my inverter. I also have 8, 4 amp hr batteries & 1, 5 amp hr battery.

If the ARB is only sporting 1.8 real cfm @ 90 psi, then what is the difference (cfm wise) between that & this ??? http://www.sears.com/craftsman-3-ga...gclid=CKaRutfhw8sCFYI9gQodS-gL1A&gclsrc=aw.ds Other than the smaller size & portability & that it is 12v.

I already have one of these & yes, my inverter will start & run it---even when it is below freezing out (I have already tried it).

Biggest difference is that the Craftsman compressor is already paid for. It's also rated at 2.4cfm at 90psi, so output is about 33% better than the ARB. If you are willing to lug the Craftsman around, it should do most of what you need.
