ARB Compressor Install With Remote Air Inlet

Well, finally got all (most?) of the air leaks fixed. Now it'll only cycle once every ten minutes or so...which is acceptable to me. I'm using a ball valve, along with RTV on most of the fittings.

Andrew, do you have a small aux. buffer tank that might help? Like an old fire extinguisher bottle that you could plumb in? I know it doesn't fix any leak but can help the cycle times, I've seen a few folks do this for a double-solution.

Get a spray bottle of soapy water and check each fitting. They can be leak free but takes some perseverence! I think you'll find RTV will not last very long. If you can't find any fittings that leak then your problem could be the O-ring seal in the diff itself. To check this, pressurize the system and lock the diff. Hold a balloon over the axle breather to see if it inflates.

Mine is setup basically the same way but when I switch the compressor on with the badly leaking QD the compressor wouldn't shut off yet wouldn't hold enough pressure to keep the lockers engaged. When I replaced the QD I added the ball valve so if it happens again the valve remains closed and the compressor acts normally. QD's do and will eventually start to leak.

Just thought I'd update and say that I can cycle the compressor and let it sit all day and no pressure is lost. When I power up again the compressor does not cycle. I've not installed a ball valve so no leaks from any of my components.

The compressor slowly died in the last few months and finally expired today. The decline had started with some increasing vibration and got to where it ran slower this morning and then it just stopped. The main fuse did not blow which meant it wasn't likely to be a purely mechanical issue. I pulled the compressor out entirely and pulled the inlet cover so that I could see the bearing on the connecting rod. It seemed okay and spun freely. However if I spun it a few times and applied power the motor might start and run a while although not smoothly. Once it had stopped it might not start again. Probably the brushes.

The ARB guys responded quickly to my first email and I've now relayed the above information to them. I'll let you know what happens.

So what did ARB customer service say?

All the emails and a phone call were very nice. The first email was to ask me to pull the air inlet cover and check for bearing failure. Since the main 40A fuse had not blown and starting was intermittent, I figured it was the brushes. I sent the info in and the next email was also nice and they gave me an RMA to ship it back to them. They said they'll tear it down and inspect folowed by a repair or replacement.

Just a tip to keep your QC's from leaking:

Put a capped male QC into them when not in use. An open QC can collect dust and the locking mechanism is susceptable to vibration that can cause intermittent leaks. '

Keeps them clean and the connection sealed. It wont vibrate off like a dust cap will.

For a dust cap I have a 1" black rubber chair tip coveringmy QC. I can charge up the compressor and it will easily hold pressure overnite.

Another Item I carry is two back to back male connectors.

If your system can still hold air, you can charge your system, and get your lockers engaged using a backup compressor or your buddy's power tank.

Waiting to hear how this turns out for you. I've go the same compressor, about 3 years old now.

Good on them. Keep us posted Jim.
