Are montero's slow?

I don't think the motor is the issue, it's the electronics that are an issue, the two aren't plug and play replacements.

Meh $300 for a new used motor is not bad.

There's more to swapping an engine than just buying a new engine. Even if the mounts are plug and play, the electronics might not be. And that's a big if on the mounts.

That $300 motor is going to end up being a multi thousand dollar cost.... If you start trying to up the horsepower it's going to cost even more and be less reliable. A montero is probably not the truck for you.

Looking for that thing i just had in my hand...
We seem to swap motors like we don't even care in Az, we've taken them in 4G and 6G directions; 4G54 to 6G74 DOHC, 6g73 to 4G64, 4G54 to 4D55, 4G54 to 4G64. Haven't done the 6G74/5 hybrid stuff but it's been done and i wouldn't hesitate to do it, Oldcolt on 4x4wire did a 6G75 with 3.5 DOHC heads. I'm working on figuring out if the 6B31 will bolt to our transmissions, that would be a great swap for power.

I was thinking just long block because the sohc 75 heads are supposed to be much better. Plus it helps eliminate the valve guide wear issue as well.

Older Japanese vehicles do not cruise the interstate at 1.5k rpm like the domestics. Yes in 2015 trucks are getting better fuel economy and have lots of power but they do that with aerodynamic improvements (have you seen the airdams/chin spoilers on new domestics? ridiculous ground clearance), many speed transmissions (6,7,8,9), fancy programming, lighter weight materials, etc etc. The 2000ish montero is getting to be a pretty old design/vehicle. By the time you do a motor swap and everything else you might as well buy something else.

Yep, I work at a Ford dealer so I spend my days underneath these new trucks and the belly of a current production F-150 is smooth like a baby's butt from the front bumper to the T-case, and it does make a difference. Add in a 6-speed tranny and the 3.5 Ecoboost and you have a truck that gets crazy fuel economy whilst still having enough balls to make the drive plenty enjoyable.

Personally I don't find my Monty to be stupid slow per se, but then again it's a 5,000-pound brick. Compared to my old GSX, it's a pig; compared to Jeeps and other SUVs of the same vintage, I'd say it holds its own.

Ran into a stranger that has a 2000 and he said the power is one thing he likes about his.

So I am thinking there is something wrong. Also gas mileage has tanked from 17-18 to 8-9 since I really noticed it being slow.

So far I have adjusted the teams lockdown cable to smooth the shifts out. It was very tight. So I went to the maximum in the fsm, cleaned the idle air valve, next is O2 sensors.
