Arkansas Fall Foliage Frolicking

As far as the size of the entire group, it was GREAT at the campgrounds... the camaraderie was what made the trips. And you are right, I feel its almost assholish to limit the number of folks... on this sort of thing. A scouting run, however needs to be NO MORE than 3-5 trucks.

I'm more for organizing these runs where we aren't swamping gas stations with 20 trucks at a time or have 20 trucks stopped at the same time on the trail. If we can work out a system where we split the group of 20 trucks into groups of 5 and have them roll out when they want and not wait on the entire group and wait a few minutes between each... that would limit the trail dust at least. The lead group will always be the ones finding the downed trees and the last group will always be the one with the most break downs.

I've now learned the importance of proper trail communication and will be looking into a HAM radio setup and better CB communications.

It was planning to come along on this trip, even if I could only work in a Sat day trip that pushed me into getting the Ham 2 meter HT. I was able to go from nothing to fully licensed and operating in 8 days.

The functionality of the 2 meter was outstanding. I could hear Wes talking with the rear guard of the group very clearly even on the portable radio. I plan to install a mobile unit in the Jeep soon.

I agree completely and will be looking at HAM also. If anyone has or builds a rock solid CB setup please pass it along. This weekend showed that solid communication is a must and there a tons of variations when working with CB.

It's all about having a good antenna. My radio is from Radio Shack, nothing special, but I have a good Wilson antenna that made the difference.

I think as we saw this weekend your CB comms are entirely related to your antenna. I always had the best range and clarity second to RSB. And RU55EL was right there with me as far as CB comms go.

I have the $20 cb radio from walmart, but the 102" antenna with an SWR reading of 1.0 was what gave me the clarity and exceptional range. And FYI the antenna was only $24.99 at a local stereo/CB shop.

I had a great trip. Glad I could make it. I felt like I did not get to visit with many people since I was busy with my two year old. It was our first tent camping trip and was a new experience for both of us. Sorry for the bad trail guidance sunday for Austin and his Jeep buddy. Sorry but I never caught his name.

No worries, I'm just glad I had good CB comms and could still reach the main group, (although barely), to guide us through the turns and keep us on track to meet back up with the group.

And my Jeep buddy was Dusty. His screen name on here is 'poot'

well put Wes. Couldn't agree more! Great trip and a pleasure to see friends old & new. Thanks to everyone for their support w/such a large group. Despite the problems, I think everything was executed very well, all things considered. Thank-you for everyone's patience and assistance to help keep everyone together. For me, this was also another learning experience. At times, I felt more occupied in the driver's seat than my time in the air behind a cockpit! I agree w/Mike, each group leader w/a 2m radio is a good idea.

each run you learn more about what to be more prepared for the next time, as expected when 'backpacking on wheels' (as I heard Wes put it once :)). In fact, yesterday I found myself more eager than anything else to go back over the route and compare it to our track log. The challenge is obviously not following the route, but having the ability to be flexible and learning how to do so quickly and efficiently.

glad to hear everyone made it back safely and in one piece! The pictures look incredible. Such a rewarding trip. Look forward to the next one. :sombrero:

Did not know you were a pilot. I am also and I felt pretty
Busy also. It is hard filling a sippy cup and drive on those
Windey roads. That is three pilots on the trip that I know of.

Sometimes, reading instructions first is a good idea. :ylsmoke:
