Arrgh! Axle seals AGAIN!

Good luck with this! It took my Toyota dealer 2 tries to get the axle seal replaced properly (under warranty). I suppose on the 2nd time they followed the TSB and assigned the experienced tech!

Well, they say it is ready to pick up. I hope this time they got it. It sounds from what they are saying that they covered all the bases as far as checking alternative issues, like clogged breather, bearings, axle shafts, so hopefully, whatever/however they did it differently this time...works....

I am telling you right now that if these didn't replace the bearing you will be having it replaced in the next 2-3k. I have been through this on my Toyota and the only solution is once that seal lets go and gear oil gets in that bearing is to replace the bearing.

Well, it hasn't leaked in the last 5 miles...

Time will just tell if they fixed it right. I hope that they got everything. It is still under warranty for another 20K or so (driveline) so if in a few thousand, or few hundred, or whatever...miles....it acts up again....I will just take it back....perhaps to a different dealer.

But here is hoping that it holds at least for the next week or so...

Anybody else had issues with their axle seals?

23,301 miles - replace left rear seal, replace oil soaked shoes

89,000 miles - replace right rear axle seal and bearing

112,000+ miles - replace right rear axle seal

This is not uncommon on the Tacomas. Did you get the rear brake shoes replaced and the drums resurfaced? If not, it might haunt you somewhere down the road. The last time I replaced the rear axle seal I didn't replace the shoes because they looked just fine. I ended up having symptoms that did not seem to be related to the brakes at all (long story). Anyway, it was indeed the brakes.

Well, 3K miles and one Expedition Trophy event later, it appears that this time they fixed it right! :wings:

No leaks and it does not appear to be showing any other ill effects either. It was annoying it took 3 trips within a month, but so glad they got it fixed right before I took the trip.

You might have blown wheel bearing causing seal failure if there is fluid on your brakes. One other question was the bearing replaced before this problem started?

I had bearing issues, but I believe it was only the front bearings replaced. Since this last attempt at a fix, though, it has not leaked, and it has been about 4000 miles, one Trophy event, and now about 3 weeks later, and it has not started leaking again, so at this point, it seems that they remedied whatever they were doing wrong upon install.

I'm glad those monkey's fixed the problem.
