We were in dark sky country over the long weekend. We had great weather, not a cloud in the sky, and the stars at night, oh my! I didn't want star trails, I wanted to capture it the way we saw it. In order to do so I had to do the unthinkable and set the camera at ISO 3200. I tried other lower ISO combos but even with a 30 second exposure you start to see trails so I had no other real options. There is noise here, and plenty of it, but I got the shot I was hoping for.

There's not many places left where you can see the milky way on a clear night...

Here are another couple from last weekend. I was doing some back country hiking and came across a clear stream with wild orchids scattered here and there. I actually sat in this spot for some time before I pulled out the camera. I only took about 10 pictures but the first image I took was, IMO, the best. It's the first one presented below.

This was taken a couple of years ago with a Sony video camera used in "still mode"......that's why it's not as clear as it could be. But I just love the shot!

A two-frame story ...

We had a monsoon storm pass through last weekend and my daughter was mesmerized by how hard the rain was falling. The right pane is the branch of a Hibiscus tree on our patio that was being pounded by runoff from the roof.

Shot at ISO 1600 for that grainy look; 580EX bounced off ceiling.

This is one of colour shots from the series of B&W shots like the ones I had posted a few pages back. Have you ever really looked at the bubbles in aloe gel? Oh and all these were taken with a G9.;)

a few I like

It's intimidating and humbling to post pictures to this site and to this thread. There's some amazing talent represented here. Y'all have taken some stunning photos. Here's a few that I have taken that I like. Mostly just point and shoot, but I'm making an effort to point and shoot at things that I like. My camera is a run of the mill Canon Powershot A40.

This is looking toward Niagara Falls, Canada from the U.S. side. I liked the mist and I like the verticality of this picture.

Next is a picture I took through the security fence at the World Trade Center. I think the fence almost makes the photo look like a puzzle, or a mosaic or something.

This is a picture across Lake Merritt in Oakland. I set the shutter speed to stay open for a few seconds and let it go. It's not great, but I kinda dig it.

Here's the "Door to ?" that I took in San Francisco.

This picture represents the core of my memories of living in the Bay Area. It's kind of hard to explain, but this does it for me. This is near Point Reyes.

Does this count for an amateur? It's about as artistic as I can get.

After Edouard today, near downtown. Decided to play around on Picnik, and this is what I got. Criticisms VERY welcomed.

I ended up messing around with the first one until the building came out. Then I decided to frame it a bit differently. What do y'all think?
