Now we need a truck! We bought an AT Atlas pop-up camper before the pickup it will go on. The truck should arrive this spring or early summer.
Two weeks ago we visited Main Line Overland (MLO in Bow, NH to talk to them about possibly ordering an AT Atlas camper for the Sierra 1500 with a 6 1/2 foot bed we will be acquiring in several months. Given a current lead time of 40 weeks we thought we should get an order in soon so that we would have a camper for 2023. The previous week MLO had told us over the phone that they could order a unit but that they did not have any available to look at and usually did not have any in stock.
When we arrived at MOL we discovered they were in the process of taking an AT Atlas off a truck which was being put up for sale on consignment, and we could look at it as soon as it was off the truck. The owner had lived in it for a year with her dog, but after adding another dog decided she needed something bigger. What truck was it on? F150. Bed length? 6 1/2 feet. Hmmm - it might be of interest.
We walked to the other building with the shop to look at the unit, and discovered it is in very good condition and has the options we want: thermal liner, Arctic Tern awning windows on both sides, Arctic Tern roof hatch, front sliding window, liftgate window and MaxxFan. It also has solar panels and an awning which were not on our list to include with the order. The previous owner add thin wood paneling on the side walls and ceiling which we like. The price was not a bargain but a significant savings over a new unit, and we could have it to use this summer after the truck arrives. We went for it.
Next we needed to take it home and store it until the truck arrives. How to transport it and store it was solved with a platform on a boat trailer sized for the camper with a solid bottom to discourage mice from moving in. Monday we drove down to Bow, MOL loaded it on the trailer, and we drove home. After the truck arrives we'll take it back to MLO for installation.
We went from being resigned to not having a camper until 2023 to having one sitting in our barn awaiting the truck to mount it on.
