They were going to do it earlier, but moved it back.
YJ and TJ lasted about 10 years, JK will be about the same, maybe a year later.
The Wrangler assembly line is being upgraded and expanded and component "packaging" for Federal crash standards makes the current engine bay too small for some of the power plants they may want to use. It's unlikely they would spend hundreds of millions to change the engine bay, when they can wait for the total redesign and spend that R&D money once.
They already produce a diesel wrangler.... or am I missing something? The r/d is done. The vehicle exists.
