aux battery pros and cons...

So, I have been thinking about a dual battery setup for a while now and wanted to hear what people think and what there experience has proven because after extensive research I am not so sure it is the best option to suit my needs. I have an 01 taco that has taken me everywhere and proven to be the amazing camping rig that I hoped it would be when I brought it. I have a sleeping platform that I built last winter that changed the game for me this past summer. It was great. All my gear was ready to go and the custom bed and mattress I made/bought proved to be better than I could have ever imagined. When I designed it I built an area that would house a spare battery because I had planned at the time to add one when funds would allow. However as I stated earlier I am not sure if it is the best option to suit my needs. At the end of the day I am looking to run a bunch of auxiliary amenities (not necessarily at the same time) when I am camping. Primarily I want to be able to run a stereo when I am out camping and possibly a small light or fan in the bed and not drain my battery. I would also love to be able to plug an electric blanket to heat things up when I am camping into the winter months. So the long and short of it is should I invest in a dual battery setup or should I just get a bad *** battery and possibly go the solar route or even just charge it when I am in between camping trips. For what it would cost I have also been pricing out small generators that could do most of what I am looking for. With all that said I would love to be told that the dual battery is worth the money and that it is my best option. I like the idea of being totally set up and ready to go but I have read a lot of reviews that said most of the dual set ups are garbage and unreliable. Any opinions would be great? If you have a set up and would share I would be very grateful! Thanks for your input.

Its worth it for me just for the little peace of mind, but I am running an ARB fridge. If my primary battery should fail while deep in the back country I'm not stranded. Ron

You could probably run everything off the main battery, especially a good battery. But the piece of mind of a second battery is just that of having 4wd! May not use it offeten but when you need it...

The 2nd battery provides piece of mind knowing that your starting battery will always have the charge you need to start the truck. I run a 2nd battery for my Engel Fridge.

I'm in the same boat as the OP. Im building my sleeping platform this weekend and next weekend and will also have a place for a second battery...still unsure if it the route I want to go.

2nd Battery is a no brainer. I would also invest it the best I could afford. Cheap insurance that will be worth 10X when you really need it.

Of course that does not mean that you should not also consider solar and a genny down the road.

There is always the simple option of carrying the 2nd battery and charging it with solar. No need to hook up a complex dual system. If your starting battery should ever fail you can either swap them or jump with the aux. KISS

I agree with this. Start simple and you can always get more complex later. The main advantage of a dual system is convenience- having the battery charged by the truck while driving and having it all wired up for jump starting and running a winch if necessary. If you don't use a winch and most of your camping is staying in one spot for several days, truck charging is less a factor and solar becomes more relevant.

I use the IBS system with my dual battery, which powers the camper (fridge, furnace, lights and gadget charging). It was expensive but has been totally trouble free and I like it. I am considering adding solar but haven't yet. You can see my setup here: http://travelswithrockythedog.blogspot.com/2013/07/second-battery-installation.html

Shall you go a-winching? If you plan on getting bad stuck and having to winch out, then that plus your ancillary needs will make a second battery extremely welcome, if not mandatory. If you don't have a winch and can make a habit of efficient use/charging practices, one big Odyssey battery will take care of you. (After replacing 2 Optimas within a 6 month period, I would never touch one again.)

Wait till the main battery dies deep in the woods and you can not start you vehicle. I happened to me when I was young. Every vehicle I have had now has two batteries, my tundra has 3.

Thanks for all the replies. I was pretty sure I wanted to go the dual battery route, and know it's seems to be the way to go. This presents a whole new set of questions. First, what battery should I get? I have been doing research and everybody seems to say the Odyssey is better than the optima. I need to replace my trucks main battery this week so I want to get the right battery as the first piece of the puzzle. I was thinking about getting the odyssey 1400 but 2 of them is gonna run me 500 buck and that's just the batteries. I would love to hear what people are using as the main battery and as there aux. Also I am wondering do I need to upgrade my stock alternator? Can it handle charging 2 batteries?

Pros:

Ability to run a fridge/ham radio/lights/whatever in camp without worrying about running the starting battery down.

Extended power availability for multiple or long winch pulls.

Ability to self-jump at the flick of a switch if anything ever does happen to your main staring battery.

Cons:

Cost, extra weight.
