Awning for a Pop-Up: To Build or Buy?

For those with campers and awning rails, I stumbled across these on Amazon (but the could be gotten elsewhere I imagine). Seems like a pretty easy way to mount an awning or any other accessory that you would want to hang. They come in packs of 7 or so and could be really useful. Just thought I'd throw it out there, maybe it would help someone.

I found Scoutman's product in first pic at my local Walmart. I saw them before his post and thought they would work well for the same application.

Alright Guys, after spending the weekend out on the East side of the Carizzo Plains, I decided it was time for the Awning. I sprung for the Bus Depot awning because I could mount it to each side or back of the camper. I like options. I cant wait to set it up! :wings:

Ill get you guys a detailed report on everything once is here.

This cost me less than $50 but I had the tent poles and the material. The new one will be out of yarn dyed acrylic. After buying the new poles and the awning rail for both side of the new Cougar I figure I'll be in it under $150 and it can be used on either side of the camper.

Slick Setup chnlisle. That is going to be nice to put on either side of the camper. That is why I went with the bus depot awning....

Which.... Officially arrived today!! First impression as I excitedly opened it up at work... :sombrero: .... It is defiantly going to be as small (packed) up as a camping chair. The legs are beefy and by the looks of it, will hold up well. I ordered the leg extensions in case I wanted to go diagonal back to my truck. There looks to be a learning curve for sure on setting this thing up, but Ill have it down in no time (hopefully).

I will get you all picts and my opinions after this weekend. It so happens Im headed out for a camping trip and am looking forward to having an awning! :wings:

Alright Gentlemen, I was able to set up the bus depot awning for the first time this weekend. While we didnt use it much at all (Camped near the beach and spent time there) it seems like it is going to work great!! :wings:

First, and a warning. There are a lot of parts when you first open your box. Deep breath, grab a beer, and dont be afraid. After setting this puppy up a few times, youll have it down.

Second. (construction) It seems fairly well built. Much beefier than I expected. The awning is a silver metallic color on top to reflect light/heat. It works great, and IMO is a plus. The material is heavy enough I think. Well see after a few years. The legs are adjustable by about +/- 18" at a time. I ordered the leg extensions for an extra $20 to add versatility and be able to eventually have them go diagonally back to the truck if I want.

Third. The attachment to the camper is going to be a piece of cake. I ordered the velcro and plan on putting (3) hooks on each side of the Skamper, and then velcro the awning to them. It will hold solid. For this dry run, I just velcored them to the latches (2) and the held up all weekend with some slight wind. I was pretty impressed.

Last. Overall, I am happy, and am looking forward to really using it. For stronger winds, it will need some guide lines anchoring it down, but it comes with them so you will be good there. It does break down to about the size of a camping chair = SWEET! And the best part is I can attach it to any side of the camper I want! That is pretty nice IMO.

I will get some more picts up this weekend when I get the mounts attached to the camper.

Hope that helps some of you guys on the fence. :smiley_drive:

I am loving the Fiamma F35 i added to the back of my popup.
Has held up perfect in moderate winds, high winds i would prefer to roll it back up. Nice to have protection from rain when stepping out of camper and a small area at the back to sit/hide out from the sun.
Its very light and added no weight to the roofcap

A bigger one on the side would be SWEET- maybe later

I can't tell from the website, but does the bus depot awning have extensions for the side that mounts to the vehicle for cases where the awning is wider than the vehicle? Let me rephrase, the awning is 8x8 and my 4Runner is only about 5ft wide. If I set it and attach to the rear of the truck, do I have 3 ft of awning flapping in the wind on one side, or is there a pole that can extend out the backside for support.

There's a picture of a Jeep on the bus depot website and I can't tell, but it looks like the back would have to be rolled up/in to match the width of the vehicle mounting surface.

If you look in my above post, last picture, there is a pole that will cantilever out to support the awning. So, you could attach it to the 5-3ft of jeep rack no problem. It would still hold its shape.

Yep, just velcro in whatever you can to your existing roof rack and the rest will have the supports off the sides.

I'm glad more folks are enjoying this awning. It's a nice compact well built affordable and versatile unit.
