Thank you

I will look for those titles. I have been through NM a few times; with a car, an old F250 4X4, and a motorcycle. That is a state that has lots to offer, so learning more about it would be great. Add to that, that I get to retire in less than a year, I will be heading out there more often.

Hey thanks everyone! I love the feedback and it's much appreciated. You can find the novels on Amazon under Sarah Leamy. I think I have a link in my signature but let me know if that doesn't work. Or you can come to NM and I'll autograph one for you before we go for a drive in the hills! There are articles out there too in internet land but I'm not sure where right now. Circus News and the Eldorado Sun published an essay about my living in Guatemala and being a street performer/ volunteer clown.
Anyway, thanks for being part of this ongoing story of ours on the portal!

May I suggest "living the dream" and " when nobody's looking"..... books of Sleam that I enjoyed very much given that I'm a former resident of New Mexico

I didn't know you'd read them! Thanks Kyle! Are you going to write about your experiences this year at Expo? I saw some familiar faces from the Deaf Community in Santa Fe which made me happy, not that I could sign with them, but I smiled!

Mogollon Rim Road

Only twenty or thirty miles from Expo was this NF road that took us across the top of the mountain range rather than following Hwy 87 up and down the narrow and busy black top. This is the way I'll come back next year (weather depending) and plan to camp near one of the many lakes. It was so incredibly beautiful it gave me the shivers. The snow did too.

I took my time, slow and steady on single track dirt roads, well taken care of, but still be careful as the drop off to the south was beyond anything you'd want to experience (or survive)...

There was a network of roads back there and in summer I imagine it's well loved but on a Monday morning after a snowy weekend, I had the place to myself. Gorgeous.

The rest of the drive home was on US 60 to I 25. Yup, I took the interstate the last 100 miles. A storm had been on top of us from near Quemado, NM to home and once we got into the mountains it poured on us. I'd planned on camping one more night but couldn't deal with the rain! I wimped out and drove home to my little adobe in the mountains!
Thanks for coming with me on this trip. Let me know if you have any questions about the routes I took. Thanks and much love, Sleam

Ordered your books

Just ordered three of your books. Looking forward to reading them.
So, I wonder what is more challenging to keep on the road (or off-road)? Your 72 Rover or my 71 Ford F 250 4X4. Keeping in mind that my old truck, Reuben, has cement shocks and springs the do not spring.
You should join us for one of our Old Iron Runs. We try and hold one each year and they are very casual and a lot of fun.
Mikey
PS dogs are certainly welcome. I always bring my three stooges.

Thanks Mikey! I would love to dream about driving all the way in the old Landy! I'm working on getting it solid and reliable enough for long distances, so much so that I bought all new BFG tires yesterday for the bugger. Where are you going next? Do you ever want to come this way?

I love your report. My family and I just moved out here to Albuquerque in September. Im looking to meet some locals that share the same interest. We moved out here from Maine which we saw a lot of in our Jeeps we owned there. We were stationed out this way for 7 yrs in the Army. 5 in Texas and 2 in Colorado and decided to move back out here. We love the southwest! Hope to hear back. Take care and happy trails.

Absolutely lets explore. I'd like to camp in the Cibola NF some time if you are up for it.

I have been wanting to get out that way again. Mo and I did a week long trip through NM in Reuben, my 71 Ford, and loved all that we saw. We hit up many of the pueblos, some hot springs, Chaco Canyon, a lot of the Jemez mountains and even spent a bit of time in Santa Fe and Taos. So yeah, I have been thinking a lot about doing an Old Iron run out there. If not an organized run, then at least another trip by myself to re-visit some of the wonderful areas that continually lay on my mind.

It was great to meet you Sarah! I had a great time and as you point out, I had a nice heater that kept me cosy warm. I think we were aiming for the most Land Rovers on one site. I left on Sunday and headed back to Los Angeles via some off roads around the Grand Canyon. Way cool!
Cheers,
Ian

Hello Ian! Thanks for getting in touch! I loved your sweet set up there. Do you think you'll be back next year too? I'm going to take a couple of weeks off and slowly make my way back in the Series through the dirt roads and forests. Great photo too!
And Mikey, stay in touch if ever you come out this way ok? Meet up somewhere? I'm thinking to go to Wild Rivers BLM in NM next week. Just for a night to start with but we'll see.
Thanks everyone for the responses,
Sarah

Sarah,

Cool trip. That road between Bernardo and Magdalena (around the Ladrones) is called the Riley Road. There used to be a town out there called Riley - down where you crossed the water. It's a great shortcut - distance wise - and much more interesting than the interstate.

Talk to me next year when you are planning your route. I have suggestions on how to get from our neck of the woods to the Expo on 90% dirt - just pop out for fuel once and a while. Beautiful country.
