I just got one, and am extremely pleased with it. The receiver is much higher quality than I was expecting for the price and battery life is unbelievable. I'm not sure that there's any substantive difference between any of the various versions...they tout this or that "new and improved" something-or-other, but they're all the same units with some slightly different packaging.

Mine was $36 delivered next day; it's a no-brainer. Spring for a decent antenna and it's still only about forty bucks! The programming cable can be a bit finnicky, depending upon which OS your computer uses. Easily solved; Google is your friend.

At this price they're almost disposable...give 'em out as party favors to your HAM friends.

I bought my Baofeng UV-5RA a few weeks ago, also an upgraded rubber duck antenna and handheld speaker/mic.

I'm impressed by this low cost unit. Although manual programming is a hassle, there are many resources on the Internet, and using CHIRP software made it easy.

I had the opportunity to offroad with it last week, coincidentally the same day as the Ham field day. On 4 watts, using an inexpensive MFJ mag mount 144/440 antenna, in the western Sierras at 6,000', I had clear communications with mobile units in the central valley 100 miles away - on 146.520 simplex! Close in communications through the trees and terrain was also excellent.

I just bought one but haven't done anything other than stick it on the charger yet.
