Barbour styled jacket for less $$$ ????

I live in the DFW metroplex and have a desk job. I do not want define my style more than just a gore-tex jacket. I enjoy the style of Barbour jackets, but do not have the funds to commit to that sort of jacket. Just for the sake of style. I like the utility of the Filson jacket, but not necessarily the look.

I guess, what I'm getting at is that I do not need it to be water proof or genuine. I'd like to have a go-to jacket, but its not necessarily going to accompany me on every hiking trip. I spend most of my time at work anyways.... and its Texas, so its only really cold for a couple months a year. If I could afford a Barbour jacket I wouldn't have posted this inquiry...

Catch my drift?

Heavy jackets, wouldn't go hiking in it.

The Tin Cloth Packer is about 7.5lbs. I don't wear it in a car, to get groceries in or as a fashion statement but it can't be beat for traversing the dense balsam thickets of the woods around here. I've done plenty of moderate hiking in it, anything more I use a layered system. I read a story, maybe a testimonial on the Filson site, about a guy surviving a grizzly attack thanks to his Tin Cloth. Claws made it through the back of his coat but little if any bodily damage. I don't think the OP needs that in the DFW metroplex.

Yes, spending twice as much for something seems prohibitive but might as well just get what you want, you'll forget the pain of shelling out the cash soon enough(maybe your SO will too? Kids are overfed nowadays anyway.) and always appreciate the lasting quality of what you have. Save for another month or 2, get your Barbour.

That Filson looks like a terrific deal -- especially as it's a US-made coat. As much as I'm a fan of my Barbour, those Filson's really deserve a hard look!

FWIW....I've owned plenty of Filson gear over the years, but their wax jackets do not ride like a Irish or UK built wax coats. They are overbuilt; too damn heavy and boxy.

My mother lives on the West coast of Ireland and there are a bunch of wax jacket manufactures there. Sort of like local Carharts. Mostly house labeled. They wear like iron and are 80% the quality of Barbour, but are less than half the price. I have 14 years on a long one and five on a short one. I rewax every few years and they look new.

The last ones i got at some farm supply store out side of Shannon were ~$100 each after exchange rate. Also, since they do not cost 400 bux, I have no worries about actually doing work in them, and I don't look like every other yuppy in Boston. They may take a while to ship here, but if you can source over the internets, they are a great value . I can bring some back, but their weigh adds up fast in luggage....

Here is a great example of what I'm talking about: http://farmwear-ireland.safetyplus.ie/productdetails.asp?ProductID=1605&ProductName=180A.DK180.GRN

To answer your question:

Check farm supply stores—I can't think of any brand names, but it seems like there's always a few waxed cotton jackets floating around farm and fleet or cal ranch.

But you should spend the extra money and purchase the Barbour, they are a high quality product that will last for a very long time, plus they hold their value well if you ever want to sell it. People will actually pay more money for a worn-in Barbour jacket than a new one.

I'm just growing into mine after purchasing it 4-5 years ago.

I picked up a 95% charcoal grey wool pea coat (still in transit) and still looking for an acceptable looking and reasonably priced barbour style jacket. And, laugh at you will, I found three nice wool/wool blend sweaters/pull overs that are grey or brown at a thrift store. Two of which are Woolrich. Brand new. Wearing those with a blazer gives me the outdoorsy/trendy style I was looking for. Hell, I almost feel ashamed worrying about style. Just trying to look better than the jean and tshirt wardrobe I'm slowly replacing....

I trust Filson. Other knock off brands seem to turn rancid and stink like old cooking oil. LL Bean was the last stinky one I had.

I have four Barbour items - an unlined jacket, a wool lined coat and two "commando" sweaters. I bought them all in the UK years ago and have gotten good use from them. I am not a particular Anglophile, but the Barbour stuff is good.

Filson makes great stuff. When traveling I sometimes think I'm the Filson poster boy. But since they were bought out by an investment group headed by a fashion industry executive, the prices have gone way up and my interest in their products has plummeted. I doubt that I will buy anymore gear from them, though I do love their super lightweight cotton shirts.

I go to the Barbour retailler, find the right size. Then I go to eBay and buy a nearly new one. Dun!
